Newark in the Snow ~ 11Feb12

Following the coldest night of the year, the digital thermometer in the taxi as I arrived at the museum gates read -4. I never made it for Newark in the Snow last year because of the snow but this time there was just enough covering the aircraft and the ground. Wall to wall blue sky and sunshine also helped and I kept moving around as much as possible to keep warm. Many thanks to the museum staff, who were still trying to open frozen locks as I arrived, for their welcome. Camera techie stuff at the end.

Although I had a battery in my shirt pocket to keep warm, the Sony SLT-A35 worked without a problem despite the cold. This time I was mostly using the ‘AUTO+’ function and the Panorama mode. Unlike the AUTO function which picks the shutter speed/F number/ISO automatically, AUTO+ picks one of the preset functions as in Landscape/Hand Held Twilight/Backlight/HDR etc. Most of the photos were taken in Landscape mode, apart from the panorama shots, but pointing towards the sun changed to Backlight or HDR. Sony 16-80mm Karl Zeiss Lens.

Cor!

My fave is the Meteor in each set of photos – cracking shots:)

That Russki pilot (looks like you got him just in time before he escaped) is Davidas Hibbertski, is it not?

Dodgy looking fella in civvies – never mind Russki flight gear:D

He likes dressing up doesn’t he;)

Both MiGs have featured with re-enactors but I know that Brian has many good references from those Photo Shoots!

A Night Time Story from Newark

Our story begins at an airfield in southern England in the 1950’s. A leading socialite is waiting for the crew of her Dove to load her luggage for a flight to the continent, possibly Switzerland by the warm clothing she is wearing.

Meanwhile, over in Europe and 30 years later, the Cold War is at its height and a visiting Vulcan at an RAF Germany airbase is prepped for a possible return home and guarded by a detachment of British Army On the Rhine troops.

A bit further to the East and across the Iron Curtain, a Polish Air Force MIG-23ML ‘Flogger’ was under the care of a guard and his dog…….

Back in the west and with the Vulcan departed for places unknown, our troops relaxed at the airfield defenses with a brew up and a tab…..

Remarkably our Polish pilot in his bright East German flying suit had managed to nick a Russian Air Force MIG-27K ‘Flogger’ and he was being detained until the Secret Squirrel people arrived……

Sadly the NF14 is not due to go inside. 🙁

Bums on seats is definitely a key aim!! 🙂

re;

The Meteor is cracking lets hope she goes indoors at some point. The MIG looks at home, be good with reenactors!

Having been an excitable school kid they need as many bums through the gate as possible. Funnily enough its where it all began for me – exploring the shack in the 80s and that led to airfix, airshows etc…

Despite it being school half-term holidays, sadly a cold February day is never going to draw the crowds at Newark – if you’d been there today you’d have faced a bit more of a challenge with the coach party that arrived at lunchtime.

Slightly off topic but this makes interesting reading! 🙂

Plus don’t forget the Open Cockpit Days that run for the rest of the week! 😀

How do you manage to take all these photographs with no people in them!? Was no-one else at Newark or was it just because you arrived so early!

During the morning, I did more or less have the place to my self but during the afternoon the noisy, treat museums as adventure playground kids turned up.

Good to see no snow covered vulcans sitting on their tails this year 🙂

It’ll need to pull up a lot of concrete before that happens on XM594! 😉

A great set Brian – some nice angles to try and emulate!! 😀

Interesting effect with the panel and structure lines showing through the snow!
