Just been trawling a few websites and came across the link below, which shows the Viggen yesterday.

Canberra
Also took a few of the PR.7 (as you’d expect 😉 ). Looks tidy externally but could do with some work in the cockpit.

🙁

. . . also Canberra PR.7 is now in 31 Squadron markings [work done by a guy from Lincoln and the North Hykeham ATC].

The PR.7 is WH791. It was repainted and given the ident of WH792, by permission of the owners, for the 31 Sqn 90th Anniversary. WH791 was never a 31 Sqn aircraft, but has been re-serialed to depict WH792, which was. A re-paint was part of the deal. I believe it will stay in 31 Sqn markings for a couple of years.

Viggen
I visited last week for the 31 Sqn get together at Newark. Not much was happening whilst I was there though so I tootled around the place. Ref the Viggen . . . took these at that time, they maybe complement those already posted.

Peter.

I was told that the Shackleton was being spruced up for an Anniversary event in 2007 – I think it was 50th Anniversary of Mk.3 Shacks entering service or something similar.

Hastings could do with some work, but I believe that it is the usual issue too much work and not enough volunteers. One positive came from the volunteer working on the Buccaneer who said that the museum volunteers were now starting to go on training courses as part of a BAPC scheme.

David Burke.

Forgot about the ‘Chippie’ after mentioning it on another thread, it needs to be moved in front of the Lee Richards Annular to be more noticeable. Perhaps it might become more visible when the wings are fitted.

And the Chipmunk which must deserve a special mention for the gentleman who has almost singlehandedly restored her over the last ten years!

I was at Newark yesterday afternoon and was talking to one of the volunteers’, who is sometimes involved in Enthusiast Tours & Cockpit Opening Events.

He mentioned that all parts, including recce pod, weapons pylons have now been re-fitted. Main outstanding work is electrical connections, which have to be completed to open cockpit canopy etc. He also advised:
– that so far no date has been set for the handover ceremony with the Swedish Air Force / Embassy;
– the final display location for the aircraft has still to be decided;
– details of any ceremony date / timings will be posted on their website. [Link below for anyone who doesn’t know it].

I must agree that the Viggen looks like one very impressive piece of kit!! 😎

Newark also seems to be busy restoration wise with work underway on the following exhibits: Heron; Buccaneer; Shackleton; Vulcan; Varsity & Javelin [both inside Hangar 2]; Gnat [in Workshop]; also Canberra PR.7 is now in 31 Squadron markings [work done by a guy from Lincoln and the North Hykeham ATC].

That is an old (ish) pic of the Viggen, the latest news on the NAM website says she is now on her undercarriage and only a couple of minor panels and bits to finish off before her official handover.

Does anyone know if there will be a special day for this handover?, I wouldn’t mind being there to see that :p .

Regards,

John.

I was up at Newark a month ago and she was certainly complete then and looking good.

John,

Did you look on page 3 of the album? If you did, you would have seen the Viggen complete and standing on its own legs! Photos were taken yesterday.

Viggen looks really good now that it’s completed.

Canberra looks good in it’s new paint as well.
