Newcastle airport

Has anybody been to Newcastle airport? Is it a busy airport, and what are the Airlines and aircraft types that usually frequent it.
Are there any direct international flights into and out of it,and can larger types like the 747 land there, also are there any good viewing areas in or around the airport.

I think BA’s the only company flying LHR-NCL, they operate 6 flights a day, with equipment used being the 737/757, A319/A320. They’re also QF codeshare flights, if you’re booking downunder. Flight time is just over an hour.

By road, it’d be a pain in the arse, as the Motorways are invariably clogged up around public holidays, driving to Newcastle’d probably be around 6-7 hours drive.

If you want to take the train, it’d be GNER from Kings Cross, www.gner.co.uk taking about 3 hours.

I should think there’ll be a second TCX 757 next season.

BA wise there is a Dash 8 service to Bristol, shuttle services to Heathrow and Gatwick, ie anything, and thats it now, with the Bristol service coming off in October.
Draw your own conclusions!

Wingflaps2 and myself were at NCL on Sunday (during a visit to the Toon itself). During the half hour or so we hung around, we managed to see an Excel 737-800, Thomas Cook 757-200, Brits 767-300 and a MyTravel A320 take off and a SN Brussels AR1 and a Flybe. Dash 8-100 land. On the ground were a couple of Eastern Airways J41s, a KLM-UK F100, a Eurowings CRJ and an Emerald Airways (I assumed?) HS 748

I was kinda weird not having the occasional Gill Airways F100, ATR or Shorts 360 come and go (Newcastle was their HQ).

Funny you should mention this. I am meant to be going up to Newcastle for 3 nights on Monday and was going to ask about the airport.

My dad will be on a business trip and may be able to ferry me to the best spots.

Hi,

NCL is the largest airport in the NE.

Its scheduled services include the following destinations:

Belfast City (BE)
Isle of Man (BE)
Heathrow (BA)
Gatwick (BA)
Southampton, Bristol, Aberdeen, Birmingham (T3 & BA)
Dusseldorf (LH)
Paris CDG (BE/AF)
Dublin (BA & FR)
Alicante, Stansted, Belfast Int, Barcelona (EZY)
Amsterdam (KL)
Stavanger

All of the above use standard turbo-props and narrow body jets.

Two Britannia aircraft are based there in the summer (one a 763), two My Travel aircraft (both airbus I think), one TCX 757.

Excel and Air Scandic also have regular services out of NCL as do Air 2000. The usual array of visitors also arrive weekly; the TCX A330 from Florida, the TSC flight from Toronto, Helios, Futura, Iberworld, Spanair, Air Europa, Hola etc etc.. doing the usual runs.

Great viewing too (except for the fence). A dedicated viewing area is next to the cafe in the main concourse.

I’ve had a quick look at the Airport website (www.newcastleairport.com), and it looks reasonably busy.

International flight wise, SN Brussels Airlines still operate to Brussels, KLM cityhopper to Amsterdam, Air France to Charles de Gaulle, easyjet to Barcelona and Alicante, Ryanair to Dublin, plus the usual Charter flights you’d expect… mainly to the Med, but also to Orlando and Toronto.

easyjet will also start flights to Paris (Orly, I think?) and Prague in August.

Wide body aircraft I can find operating out of NCL after a very quick glance through the a.net archives are A330, DC10-15, A300, RAF Hercules (if they count), 744, and AN124, although that dosen’t mean nothing bigger can use the airport or that those aircraft nescessarily could, if they were fully loaded.

Right, I’ve never actually been, but I’ve got an aunt who lives nearish to it (well, Berwick upon Tweed, but NCL is her nearest airport), and there certainly used to be direct international routes from there, Sabena flew there, and I’m pretty sure KLM uk/cityhopper still does.

Apart from that, I’m not really sure about it’s size.
