I know there’s a fair few NCL guys on here, so just thought I’d ask a couple of questions. While I’m in Belfast in July I’ve just found a flight from Belfast City – Newcastle return for £19.98 inc taxes on 28th July.
I’m mainly looking to book it to get on the Q400, and to see NCL for a few hours. However, the flight arrives at 0805 and departs at 1400, giving me about 3 hours photography time in the middle. Would this be enough to get out of the terminal, or will I have to stick around inside (ie. are the spotting areas hard to get to from the terminal?). I would get a later flight back, but it doubles in price.
Probably coming over with Mark L…would be good to meet some of you if you’re around anyway.

It’s due in at 07:15 but it might be running late. I’m going to get up at 6:00 and get to the airport for it coming in.

I have to agree with concordesst and Shuttle13t, the spot may be a field but the pictures and views are great. Not much in the way of viewing spots in NCL mostly bad view or somewhere where the security ill come and move you. The only places I really recomend is the two runway ends in the place described by 12T but Britannia’s spotting place is at the 25 end i belive. Its not really that accessible from the terminal however the view from the 07 end is good. If that made any sense to you I hope you found it useful.

Be aware – the Tall Ships race is leaving Newcastle on 28th July and around 1 million people are expected along the Tyne to watch (my family included). Don’t know enough about the approach or departure paths at NCL, but the potential is there for some awesome views out of the aircraft if you’re lucky. 🙂
Sounds excellent! Is this a globally recognised event? Because 1 million people sounds like a lot….potentially some chartered movements at NCL on the day?

For the NCL folks, today’s Excel Airways flight to Puerto Plata being operated by Air Pullmantur Boeing 747-200 EC-JFR, currently delayed until 1100, due to the massive delay on yesterdays 767 flight to Orlando Sanford

LOL, just a bit! 😀
6 flights in just over a week, including 2 types you’ve never flown before, you lucky guy!
You’ll be the FlyBe ‘expert’ flying them 4 times in 2 days!
Lol indeed, I very much look forward to it. Hopefully gonna fit a holiday in between the BLK and BFS flights, so there’ll be lots of shots to enjoy!
Cant wait for the 146. I was booked to fly on a Buzz one from STN-AMS a few years back, but FR took over the month before and cancelled the flights 🙁

Hope you have a great time Dan, cant wait for you to tell me about the Q400, i fly on one myself 5 days later!
Hehe well there should be a huge influx of photo reports over those few days, if you look at my flight plans for the 2 days leading upto it! 😮

Hi people, to wannabe erm you’ll realise how good it actually is for spotting when you get there!!
And i was told yesterday that the wings bar was only for people who have been flying, or airport staff. Maybe wrong though.

Haven’t been to NCL for ages spotting. The last time I was there spotting for real was when the roof balcony was open, which closed over 1 1/2 years ago!
This spot below may be useful, found it on the net. (Think this is where Britannia spots. I also think Nigel Fenwick spots here from a.net http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?photographersearch=Nigel%20Fenwick&distinct_entry=true – Contact him for info.)
There’s also a new bar open right next to the runway! I think it’s the old AeroClub, not sure. Here’s the link:
I think there is also a public path just behind runway 07, so the aircraft will approach/ take off quite low.
There’s the car park also, so if aircraft were approaching runway 07, and you have good zoom on your camera, then you could get a decent shot.
I’m sure there’s more spots, but as I say I haven’t been for ages so I don’t know what it’s like. 🙂
Wings Bar is members only sadly, new Aero Clubs nextdoor Chris.
You could also get the Metty from the airport to Callerton and walk to the car park next to the Aero Club. Or as Chris said, get the 101 from the airport to Dinnington round the corner.
Look at the map, number 1 is the car park, number 2’s Callerton Metty station, number 3’s Dinnington and the nature reserve, where Chris meant.
Hope this helps 😉

Cheers NCLRULES, the nature reserve looks good. And even better that the Arriva bus operates in that direction, as I can use it for free 😀
Me and Mark L are booked up now for the 28th July, so if anyone feels like coming along feel free.
