Well I certainly have a great deal of respect for Travel Agents – I just booked a long haul with my local agent at a very good price.
I see that at the moment I could book DXB – LHR on 26 Apr and returning 10 May on Emirates for £512. So why not tell us what your price is and we’ll make the judgement in mid-Feb.:p

Yes, I did go figure. The departure date is a week before Easter.
Perhaps you are naive enough to believe that the prices wont go down when there are lots of empty seats.:p
Well after 20 years as a travel agent (which I am), you just get to know which flights are going to fill quickly – like Dubai/London 1 week after easter :p

Premature? Not when you consider that they are travelling, and their dates cover the easter period. There are some airlines that you just have to book as soon as the booking window becomes open. I tried booking an EK flight out of DXB once as soon as bookings were being taken (330 days in advance  ) and already found that the cheapest seats had gone – go figure.

Ah well. I guess we are each entitled to our opinions. I recently signed up for Thai’s Royal Orchid Plus air mile scheme. By March, I’ll be a silver member and entitled to 50% more baggage allowance.. yeay!
I wouldn’t consider British Airways as an option in future. My only two trips with the airline have not been through choice.
Much like when we went to New York last year. We didn’t fly British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. For 7-8 hours flying time, we don’t want anything spectacular. We settled for the cheapest option, which was United Airlines. Absolutely brilliant. If possible, my next flights to the USA will be with them.

I havent done BA short-haul but i find them in long-haul very nice. I did Thai long-haul BKK-ZRH and didnt have a very nice flight. Worst flight was DEL-BKK.

In all fairness, when you fly Thai, your flights are short haul ones. When you fly British Airways, it is long haul, perhaps 3 or 4 times longer than your experience on Thai.
Most of my flights with BA have been shot haul.
I just feel that so many people over rate BA as they are the UK largest airline. I feel the airline gets a little complacent.;)

I’m baffled as to how you cannot compare Thai to British Airways and Lufthansa. Over-rated? How are they over-rated?

With me, it’s the other way around. British Airways I fly on short haul and Thai on long haul. On shorter flights, you only experience so much, but when you are flying for 12 hours non-stop, the service has to be a tad better in my opinion.
Thai aren’t fantastic, but they are certainly good. I too, like British Airways, but I’m not so keen on their prices. Why on earth pay more than you have to?

What i was saying is that Thai is just too over-rated, you cannot compare Thai with likes of BA, LH etc.
I disagree.
I have had so many bad flights with BA. And quite alot of the hosties are very rude.

KabirT,
Please let us know who you feel is a good airline and see if any of us have had the same experience with them as you have.
You might be suprised by the results!

I don’t think so. I guess it’s just the luck of the draw. SOFTLAD had a bad experience on an 11 hour flight, whereas I thoroughly enjoyed my 11 hour flights with them. You just have to hope you get a decent bunch of crew who can actually be bothered to do anything for you.
Good airlines should have this attitude of “luck of the draw”. Consistancy of quality is very important in attracting business.

T5,
I usually go down to Hua Hin, the other side. Great Golf there.

So is it like Thai gives more importance and quality to its more important sectors and ignores other sectors?

I agree with batboy, I even had a good experience with Ryanair. I feel an airline should be judged over a number of flights not just one.T5, where do you go/stay in Thailand? I am down there all the time playing golf.
The infamous Pattaya, renowned for prostitution, but I love all the night life, too. It’s about 90 minutes to 2 hours from Bangkok Airport.

Well, as has been said before, it really does come down to your experiences with the airline, and what you are happy with.
Our last two trips to MNL have been with LH, and although others may throw their hands in the air with horror, we were really quite happy with the trips. Although now close to a decision on who to fly with on next trip and will probably try something different especially with prices so competitive.;)

It’s a booking with Kuoni and you know these agents work. They only have so many seats on a flight, so even if the flight isn’t fully booked, Kuoni cannot have any seats left on earlier flights.
I’m happy with Thai. The service was great and the way in which the crew dressed was wonderful, traditional Thai dresses and the women changed twice or even three times during the flights.
I agree that they’re not the best airline in the world, I’d fly United if it were possible. Thai is a little behind on the times unfortunately. PTVs are not even available in First and Business Class as far as I’m aware.
The aircraft are very clean though and the leg room is great. They offer more leg room than most airlines including Qatar and British Airways in their economy.
I would so far rate Thai Airways 10 out of 10 for their flights. Entertainment was limited outbound, but coming home it was good and films were recent.
Drinks rounds were very frequent. The stewardess even mistook me for asking for a rum and coke when in fact I asked for just a coke!
Their food is better than your average Thai restaurant, too. I treated myself to a Thai lunch the other day and was presented with a scabby metal dish. Inside, it had orange and red grease with lumps of what appeared to be chicken in it.
Hungry passengers on the homeward bound flight could ask the crew for sandwiches. Stashed away in one of the galleys was an entire trolley of bread rolls and sandwiches. Coffees and teas were also available at any hour, by simply requesting it from the crew.
I love the airline and I will continue to use them for trips to Thailand. My parents flew with Qatar last year. She though they were great and says they are better than Thai. I expect they are. If they offered direct flights to Bangkok (where I am actually meant to be going), then I would fly with them. However. they fly via Doha. A few hours wait I could handle, but 18 hours is just not manageable.
