NH523 Does it Survive?

Yes yet another Spitfire thread..
However I am curious as to if a partcular Spitfire is a survivour or not. I’m refering to Spitfire Mk IX NH523. The reason I ask is I can not find it on any survivour lists I’ve have. However it showed up in a Warbirds Worldwide add in issue #16 on Page 53. The add gave a UK phone number and said that Plates and Parts were for sale. A Goggle internet search turned up some engine parts that were on ebay. So the question is what parts if any survive, who with and where? Is it another possible restoration….
Over to the experts… And Thanks to all!

Were these plates that were advertised in Warbirds Worldwide for NH523, from the Gloucestershire area with an asking price of about £20-30K?

Hi John,

I know this is a reply to a very old post. I too acquired an NH523 component with a potted history, which I have since lost. I recall it gave the name of the pilot. Please do you still have this information?

Mark – Is it suitable for the forum i.e totally free of any intrigue?

David,

No story really more than Bruce has stated.

Several parties down stream ended up with parts from this dig and thought that they had title to the ID provenance.

In the event nobody moved forward with it. Not a survivor in my book.

I think it is a myth that a pair of data plates alone constitute a provenance thread.

Sure? Haven´t read anything from him since December 31st. I´m starting to get worried …

Starfire,

I think you must have taken me off your ‘buddy’ list.

77 posts on Historic since December 2005 and you have not seen one of them. 🙁

Perhaps you will not see this one.

You’ll have to say it three times to get the NH523 story. 🙂

Hi Neil,

I’ve just been given part of NH523 as a birthday present! It seems to be part of the crankcase and is serial numbered 2 DH 933. It came with a potted history of the plane which I can post if you’re interested (I have a picture of the fragment too but don’t seem to be able to post it here…).

Cheers,

John

As I recall, NH523 was a ‘dig for money’. The wreckage was dug up, and all and sundry had a piece of her! The plates were just that, plates only. Not a survivor, or even much of a prospect!

I suppose I’m not really interested in if NH523 is classed as a survivour. (Don’t want to open that debate!) I am interested however in what still survives of her and where she is now..
Thanks again.

The WW ad was fairly clear in that it suggested the id plates were suitable as donors for a re-build. I have not seen the parts that went with the plates but it may be that they are not considered substantial or numerous enough to be classified as a surviving Spitfire per se and hence do not appear on the many avialable lists? Of course, in the fullness of time we may see a re-birth but in the meantime its inclusion on a ‘survivors’ list remains a matter for the compilers of these lists. G-ORDY?
