I’ve just been looking into the Convair 440 that went up to Scotland to be converted into a B&B… It’s a great idea. In fact, I quite liked the idea of stopping there, but at £400 PER NIGHT… Am I just being a miserable old grump, of is that a ridiculous price for a night in an aluminium tube on the edge of Glasgow? It seems a shame to me.

CV-440
If you want the true story of what happened to `conv`, I have a `friend` who was very close to the action– may cost you £400 for a bedtime story ??

Might be some food for thought for Roy Coates and his G-ANCF team, seeing as the Britannia is already on the forecourt (or should it be rearcourt?) of a posh hotel. 😉
We’ve been offering young ladies the chance to join our exclusive virtual mile-high club for some years – but sadly no takers yet.
A shame really since I know some of the lads have been practising at home… 😀

Makes the Bristol 170 at Woodlyn Park (Waitomo, New Zealand) seem a bit of a bargain then.
“The Plane Accommodation is $125/night per couple for the Plane Tail or $135/night per couple for the Cockpit – Extra people are $12 each. Each area sleeps up to 4 in one double bed and one single bunk set.”
That’s NZ dollars – about 3 to the pound.

Like I said, I think it’s a really nice idea but £400 per night sounds a bit much to me! Looks like they’re currently waiting to get the required planning permissions!
Cheers

All that talk of uniforms and role-playing sounds a bit kinky to me:D
Still, imagine what you could get up to in the Gnat. Whatever it would be, it would be pretty close-up and intimate. On second thoughts, I’m not sure I want to go down that road…

From what I understand the CAA Inspector was on board the aircraft at the time she had the fire, he was the one with the brown trousers, the flight deck crew were very proffessional on handling the sitation and got the aircraft back on the ground at Coventry where she stayed for a number of years after landing with the engine shut down,

I thought the well-documented issue was the the man from the CAA turned up to do a flight test and upon starting had an engine fire?
I don’t know much about it to be fair, whether she was on the ground or not.. She was a mess though. She creaked rather badly even when there was no wind…. The wing was held up with trestles…

There should be a AAIB report on the incident which gives more details on the engine handling side of things. She could have been repaired but was deemed uneconomic from memory.

The 440 was moved from Coventry early this year. Not sure about B&B, but she was nearly a BBQ…. the reason she was scrapped was a rather large engine fire which threated to burn the wing off – not good at altitude. Needless to say, the aircrew had brown trousers. I’m sure AlanL or someone with a bit more info on the incident would be prepared to give us the inside track. Oh, I’m renting B&B space in a Mignet Pou de Ceil… £200 per night

‘NV was broken up last year. when in only 2003 she was stood outside in the sun at Coventry with nice new paint and two engines. 🙁

… wonder what the going rate for Concorde B&B would be :diablo:

The Convair 440 is the old Air Atlantique one G-CONV it was bought by a family who runs a garden Nursery up in Scotland if i remember correctly.
The aircraft was shipped up there late last year or early this year and there has been some pictures around of the aircraft waiting to be re assembled.
It has been converted as a holiday accommadation hence the high price per night.

Sounds reasonable to me.
Where does it fly from and to? 😉
