Your original post prompted me to re-read Night Of The Whirlwind. Further to my earlier posts I’d like to add the following.

1. The author’s research and technical knowledge of the Whirlwind and how it was used operationally by 137 Squadron is excellent.

2. The characters are well crafted and believable and the way the author has written them invokes empathy from the reader.

3. The basic plot of using the Whirlwind for a ‘special’ intruder operation was well thought out and plausible.

All in all a very good read – and well worth the money.

Thank you for prompting me to re-read it!

Liked it

I thought it was excellent. Authentic atmosphere with some interesting characters and plotting, realistic but exciting descriptions of combat and the technical detail is excellent. David Bruce’s other novels “Prototype” and “Assassin” are very good, too.

I thought that the writing was ok Moggy – not a cracking read but I did enjoy it.

For those of us who have a soft spot for Whirlies it is an ok read. I enjoyed reading it.

We don’t often get to read fictional accounts about the Whirlwind – the only other one I’m aware of is ‘Whirlwind Squadron’ by Eric Thomason. Interestingly it was also about 137 Squadron. Sadly Eric claimed it as a true account of his wartime service. But that in itself is another story! Last time I checked his book can be bought second hand for between US$180-$200!

Getting back to answering your query though. The plot is, in the main, ‘plausible’ and fits in with the type of operations flown by 137 Squadron.

However, there are a couple of instances towards the end where the realms of credibility become somewhat stretched.

Hopefully I haven’t been too cryptic but I didn’t want to spoil your read!
