How many of you bought a Nikon D70 DSLR during Nikon’s special offer period only to discover that the D70s was just around the corner? Me for one!
What you may not be aware of however, is the fact that you can ‘upgrade’ your D70 ‘free of charge’! Don’t get too excited – you can’t take it back to the shop and just swap it for the latest model but you can upgrade the ‘firmware’ inside it by downloading the necessary files from Nikon to your PC, transferring them one at at time to your CF card and then copying the files to your camera. The benefits are mainly improvements to the autofocus system and clearer menus plus some for direct printing from the camera.
Whilst it is not possible to upgrade the 1.8 inch display on the D70 to the 2.0 inch of the D70s, they both use the same number of pixels anyway!
All you need to do is to register your camera with Nikon on their website and then follow the instructions for upgrading – it will only take 5 minutes!

I bought the D70s, purely to see how good this digital thing is you understand!! Whilst I still prefer the look of film, the D70s (and doubtless the D70 too) is a very accomplished camera. Under sensible shooting conditions it is very difficult to fool the auto white balance and the auto exposure. And the output is sharp without resort to third party modification…..
If there is a downside, it is that JPEG output tends to block up shadows and blow highlights. I shoot raw and process through RawShooter Essentials and the results are excellent, albeit ‘digital’ looking.
