Nimrod Back in service after safety fears

Looks like the Nimrod MR2 is back in service with the RAF. Out of the 11 aircraft 8 have had modifications to make them safe but they will not be doing Air to Air refueling. The modifications involved replacing engine bay hot air ducts and improved fuel seals.

It appears that some could now be deployed overseas to support ongoing operations. This could involve a trip to hunt Somali pirates or going back to Afghanistan. The afghanistan trip is not so likely now that ASTOR and UAV’s are deployed.

I am glad to see this big beast back in service but how long before the MR4 comes online. It’s already about 10 years late! I guess the reason there are only 11 MR2’s is because some are being converted to MR4. I really hope the RAF get more than the 9 MR4’s being ordered. If these are to run for another 30 years it more than likely 1 or 2 will crash and another couple are damaged. The MOD is leaving no spare capacity. Word is the 3 development aircraft maybe made into R1 replacements. I would prefer to see at least 12 MR4 with a good overland capability and maybe a new aircraft or ex airliner for the R1 replacement. Anything apart from 45 year old KC-135’s. The A330 would be a good fit or the smallest model of the A340.
