Today the Nimrod is recognised as one of the best maritime patrol aircraft. A new and supposedly better Nimrod will be comming out sometime in the next five years (perhaps) -the MR4. This will increase the aircrafts performance due to a new wing, new engines and avionics. With a even better range and the ability to air to air refuel (as today) could the Nimrod be turned into a bomber. The Nimrod has a very large bomb bay so could it be turned into a cruise missile launch vehicle opperating in a similar role to the USAF’s B-52’s, carrying the air launched Tomahawk or the new BAE Storm Shadow unless the storm shadow has too smaller range for the comfort of the Nimrod. A strike capability like this for the RAF would be a great benefit to the RAF and perhaps a proposed Euro Rapid Reaction Force. I am not sure about todays Nimrods but I have seen pictures of Nimrods carrying Sidewinders, maybe this could be inhanced to carrying ASRAAMS and the aircraft having advanced Electronic counter measures.
