Nimrod Down

Incredibly sad news of a Nimrod lost on operations over Afghanistan. Spare a thought for the families and friends of the crew .

CNN are reporting eyewitnesses saying the plane was flying at about 10,000 feet and flames were coming from the tail section and suggesting an electrical fault. 🙁

All speculation at this point, but in the absence of a statement from the MoD it’s only human nature to wonder out loud.
Trouble is that until some sort of authoritative statement along the lines of ‘preliminary inquiries suggest that …’ is released, the conspiracy theorists will have a field day.

I was on 51Sqn in the days when we had a real enemy.

A different one LesB, I feel that the current one is just as real.

One of the crew of the 120 Sqn aircraft, Flt Sgt Adrian “Ady” Davis, was on 51 with me late ’80s. A good bloke and first class F Eng.

Were you “A” or “C”?

This theory was debated on Sky News yesterday evening which also mentioned the Nimrod that came down in the North Sea as the result of an engine fire.
Would not a fire in one of the inner engines cause serious damage to the fuselage as well as failure of the wing root.
They also reported that all Nimrods are now grounded pending examination.
Whatever caused it, it was a very tragic incident and rather than us all becoming armchair analysts, we should remember those greiving families and friends up at Kinloss and offer our condolences.

If, as the MoD says, the Nimrod was not shot down, then it appears that some sort of catastrophic failure may have overwhelmed it at operating altitude.
More information, obviously, is needed. But it’s worrying.

Does anyone know if there is a list of the crew yet, as we have a distant family friend who is Nimrod Crew.

Secret squirrels

Sadsack is quite right to memtion the R1 Nimrods based at Waddington.
Go to the RAF Waddington website, click on Squadrons, then click on the (red goose) 51 Squadron badge. Here you can read all about the Nimrods. Not so secret after all.

Sadsack – Since the end of the Cold War the MR.2 fleet has found itself increasingly useful in the airborne command post role . Imagine the dificulty most people have in the U.K getting good mobile reception and then compare that to the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan where poor reception goes with the territory !
There is also the useful role of electronic evesdropping.

An r1 from Waddington would make sense.

I’d love to be filled in on this.

Re

I’m puzzled about what a Nimrod MR3 was doing there. I thought it was an anti submarine aircraft?

That’s terrible news. My thoughts and prayers are for the crew, their families and friends. Isn’t it about time this tinpot excuse for a government got our troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq?
