Anyone seen on Pprune there is a rumour that the Kinloss gate guardian Nimrod could be scrapped as early as next week?

This is from the front page of our weekly ‘Northern Scot’ newspaper…

Good luck to them I say – and save both!

Not all doom and gloom then if they manage to pull this one off. Hats off to them if they do!! I wonder if they could save both Nimrods. Paint ’40’ up in the early scheme and leave ’44’ in the late scheme to show 40 years of opperations…

XV240 was indeed towed away to another location somewhere on Kinloss. However the latest news is that a group of Ex Nimrod air and ground crew plus some local enthusiasts calling themselves Moravia have plans to set up an aviation heritage centre either at Kinloss or close by.
They have placed a cash deposit on XV244 with the intention of making this the centrepiece of the project. They will also try to get the nose section of 240. I’ve attached a link to the local paper with all the current info.

Tony, I said exactly the same thing when the first rush of Nimrods for disposal was first mooted.
I didn’t think the Kinloss example would be the first to succumb, but then it is becoming an Army camp and they don’t like RAF toys left about!
I didn’t think this was a definite either…. not seen anything on local news yet…..
Kind regards
Scotty

I have special memories of XV240. It was the aircraft that trailed us to Canada and back when the Red Arrows visited in 2002. Looking over the Arctic Circle and it’s all too small icebergs, knowing that a Nimrod with it’s MS10 liferaft was nearby did a great deal to settle the nerves. I decided in Sondestrohm on the return leg that having a look inside a Nimrod was long overdue, so went for a gander. The crew made me a lovely cuppa and I surprised at how roomy it seemed…well, it was compared to the back seat of a Hawk whilst wearing a full immersion suit, nav bag x2, food box, rucksack, Tupperware, CD player and disc case!!!!

Well if you need one can’t we get one we exported back?

Whilst I agree it should remain, especially due to it’s location, in the past the odd one of each type would hopefully be preserved.
Has one not thought that with the seemingly mad rush to save all of them, as happened with the Vulcan, we ended up with a watering down of funds raised to save these aircraft and the resulting scrappings that took place, surely fewer with more resources available to look after them is better than quantity over quality… After all it is not as if a Nimrod isn’t secured, at Coventry, Bruntingthorpe and soon to be Cosford etc etc etc
Preparing to get shot down in flames here

Again according to that Pprune thread the scrapping is to go ahead. 😡
