Nimrods in preservation

Looking at the numbers and locations of the Nimrod retirements – is there a long term strategy to get at least one undercover with a museum? It strikes me that whilst these aircraft are pristine now – in ten years plus what will be their future when corrosion has got a hold?
Looking closely at the R.1 in particular -it seems there is a good chance that all three remaining examples might make their way into preservation . An interesting contrast to the previous fortunes of the 51 Squadron Comets .
With the aircraft containing all sorts of different materials – it’s a savvy way for the RAF to get rid of the aircraft instead of having to pay for it to be done ala VC-10 . With this possibly being the RAF’s last disposal of large aircraft to museums -what effect will it produce in the preservation world? A sustained increase in visitor numbers(revenue) or will that be offset by increased costs?

After all the hype about nimrods being retired it has gone a bit quiet? Have any of the museum nimrods had engine runs done as part of the anti det process?

Indeed there are a few people I should imagine who would like to see one back at Luqa.

One of the reasons why the new arty building at Cosford was a waste of money,
all Cosford needed was a big super hangar to house such types that will retire over time.

No thought as gone into preserving any future types VC10s Hercules Nimrods. Merlin chinooks etc to name a few.

will see mega milions wasted at Hendon if there plans are carried out, with no forsight being made for future or even past cover for these Aircraft.

What’s happening to the one not going to Manston?

Right, which museum is going to be the first one brave enough to apply the MR.1 scheme of light grey and full colour roundals?!

kns
How right you are about 55 and only 29 left to go tomorrow? to Manston, where it will eventually be used as a smoke and evac trainer by the defence fire school when it is moved over to their site. No more MR2 flights after the 28th.

….and que Twin Otter…;)

It seems a bit wrong for the RAFM to be the only major aircraft museum NOT to have a Nimrod!

Actually DB, thinking about our little convo on the Shack thread, it would have been nice to have seen a Nimrod go to Malta!

I may be, and very often am, wrong in thinking that someone has told me within the last few days that the Nimrod which arrived at Norwich yesterday (XV255) was the one allocated to Cosford ? and that Cosford had said they no longer wanted it ?????
Is this why the arrival at Norwich was not known about untill Wed 19th May (last week) this fact came from the museum here at Norwich ?

Ready for INCOMING ….;)

The last time I went in the transport hangar there was a large space cleared in there, i’m not inferring that is wheer it will go, bout obviously space can be made.
Cosford dosen’t display aircraft outside now (apart from the non RAF Britannia & Neptune).

Unless they have applied some technology from the tardis, I cannot see for the life of me that a nimrod could go inside at cosford!

I think there is someting in that personally.

However as a Maritime fan it is great to see all these airframes preserved.
I’m stil confused about the Cosford situation, but I would assume if they are getting one, that it will go indoors?
