Does anyone know anything about 7/NJG 2 in Denmark in September 1942. They were based at grove/Karup at the time and I am particularly interested in finding out what aircraft the unit was using at the time. The information I have so far suggests that it was the Do217J or the Ju88C-2/6 as the unit may have been converting to the Ju88 at the time.
I would also be interested to hear if anyone knows anything at all about Leutnant KarlHeinz Brandes who appears to be a likely candidate for shooting down Lancaster R5679 on the 25th September 1942.
Any help or information would, as always, be greatly appreciated.

RE: NJG 2 in Denmark.
Nitram.
Thanks again. It is from the O.K.L. source that I have deduced that R5679 was indeed Leutnant Brandes victim. I suppose the next step is finding someone who can tell me whetther a combat report for this incident exists.

RE: NJG 2 in Denmark.
Combat reports come in two parts the combat claim Abschußmeldung and the corroborating witness report Luftzeugenkampfbericht. There are some available but they are a bit like hens teeth or unicorn dung, you might be lucky though.
Mostly have to rely on the microfilm lists of victories produced by the O.K.L. Chef für Ausz. und Dizsiplin, (Luftwaffen-Personalamt L.P. (A) V Films)These are available from the German archives, but with my poor German I have never done the task myself.
A message left on the Twelve O’Clock High, Luftwaffe Message Board may give you the right directions (sorry no link to hand)

RE: NJG 2 in Denmark.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-10-02 AT 08:34 PM (GMT)]Nitram,
Thanks for that. I also have the time as 02.13 and that the Lancaster which crashed in England was attacked by nightfighters twice and damaged by flak. R5679 impacted the ground near Gronhoj and the Danish press reported no anti-aircraft fire and the aircraft came to earth in flames. The time of 02.13 for the claim also gels with the Danish press report that the aircraft came down around 02.00 hrs. Therefore, I am inclined to believe that it was R5679 which was Leutnant Brandes victim.
Can you tell me, is it possible to access Luftwaffe combat reports?
Thanks again.

RE: NJG 2 in Denmark.
25.09.42 Lt Karlheinz Brandes of 7/NJG2 claimed a Lancaster flying at 1900 m over Denmark. Time 02:13 or 01:22 depending on source. This was the only claim I can find for the night of the 24/25 Sept.
The last loss of a Do217 J by III/NJG2 was on 11.08.42 and there are losses of Ju88 C-6s from 7/42-5/44, with a few (2 each) C-2s and C-4s in the early months. Therefore my best guess is that he was flying a Ju88 C-6.
Two 61 Sqn a/c were lost R5724 was attacked by flak and fighters near Viborg and crashed in England on return. R5679 exploded over Gronhoj. Without looking at the combat reports it is possible that R5724 was Brandes’ victim
I have no info on the Lt
Hope this helps
