No 29 squadron RFC and James Dennis Payne

I am doing research into the RFC service of Mr. Payne, who was a family friend.

He was posted to 29 squadron in France on August 6th 1916 as a sergeant.

Promoted to 2nd lieutenant on October 30th 1916 and became a flight commander in November of 1918.

I have read Osprey’s Nieuport Aces and Norman Franks’s Above the trenches, both of which deal with his service in a very limited way.

Are there any 29squadron experts on the forum or could someone point me to more detailed reading about the squadron’s service in France? I would love to read memoirs or biographies of squadron members if these exist.

Would there be a way to ascertain which flight he commanded? It would be interesting to try to get an idea of what his aircraft might have looked like. (I am aware that C flight carried very distinctive markngs, I don’t know if this was the case for all flights in the squadron)

The family has several wartime photographs of him but they are take near the end of his service (in the RFC that is, as he served in the Canadian Army during the second World War if I am not mistaken) and show him in an S.E.5a.

Many thanks in advance.

B.
