I thought it best to start a new thread to pass on the disappointing news that Newark Air Museum will not now be pursuing a Nimrod from the RAF.
The news has just been posted museum website! ๐

Many thanks for all of the comments, which are appreciated and as much as I love Nimrods (Sorry Toddington Ted youโre wrong about them being ugly!! :D) deep down I know it is the right decision.
Iโm not willing to debate all the finer points of the spares recovery issue, which is just one of several factors that I know have influenced the decision.
Some of you may have noticed my โfishing tripโ on this topic on one of the other Nimrod threads the other week, needless to say no additional reassuring information came forward that could be passed on to the trustees.
As some have also pointed out all of the reasons behind the decision are clearly stated in the NAM text and I would personally like to add my own good wishes to all those groups that have secured examples of this fine aircraft type. ๐
Pure Lightning – we opted not to pursue a nose section in preference to sorting out the Ashton fuselage! ๐

Could a nose of a Nimrod section be the way forward for Newark?…………just an idea

That’s quite interesting! I know it’s cynical but do you suppose there really is any commonality of parts (assuming they’re even worth recovering) or could that be a bit of BAE Systems spin-doctoring?! Surely, they wouldn’t still be trying to suggest that the MRA4 is anything other than an Airbus, would they?! ๐

As I understand it, there is still a degree of commonality with MRA4, and parts are being removed to support this.

Very sad news. No possibility of acquiring one of the remaining aircraft after retirement next year I presume? They surely can’t need to recover any spares after that?! I guess the transportation matter would still be a problem though.
Tim,
No matter when or which airframe is aquired the transport arrangements to NAM would still be the same, this is the biggest reason for their withdrawal from tendor and is clearly stated on the museum website.

Good call – always best to know where to draw the line – if a little disappointing to you right now.

Well put. Whilst Newark Air Museum would benefit from a Nimrod R1 on display it would benefit far more from another hangar for the aircraft still stuck outside in the (today-horrendous) weather. A good example of liking what you have rather than having what you like and seeing it all rot away and sinking into the soft grass in the damp English climate with accompanied bird poo. A good decision albeit a difficult one and I applaud you for it.
(Nimrods are ugly anyway…….runs for cover!)

There’s still at least one complete MR2 parked at Kinloss, apart from ‘gate guard’ XV240…

Twin,
A perfectly put statement and a very well thought out decision, although a very hard one for the trusties to have made it has common sense written all over it.
Regards,
John.

That must have been a very emotional and difficult decision to make but a realistic one.I am sure the funds allocated will be put to a good use and more of the static airframes will benefit from some much needed painting and fettling.

Despite being an ardent Nimrod fan I have to agree and in the end it was decided unanimously! ๐

A great shame, but hardly surprising given the contents of the statement.
