How bloody stupid do TV advertisers think we are? 😡
Right, let’s just assume for a second that the pump of my anti-bacterial soap dispenser is infested with botulinus and I get it on my hand as I pump soap…
…what is the very next thing I’m going to do?

CD – it is targeting those who may be obsessive about germs, perhaps irrationally so. It is not therefore designed to solve anything substantive in the domestic home.
Not everybody who is obsessive about germs is irrational..having had a transplant.. i have a compromised immune system from the anti rejection drugs ..so i must be fastidious about germs and cleanliness to a point where i drive people crazy

I think they’d rather we bought the product and somehow I don’t see anyone here doing so……………..

And just think, someone got paid an awful lot of money to dream this item and its advertising up.
To think that we used to laugh at Reggie Perrin and his dull office and home life, and who was paid to come up with ever more stupid ideas to sell.
I think most of them have become reality.
However we are talking about the ad, and that’s just what the product and ad makers want us to do!

…how would your automatic soap dispenser get infested if all you’re doing is placing your hand underneath the dispensing device and getting a squirt of anti-bacterial gel onto your palm?
Yes, but the only time I would touch my non-automatic soap dispenser (and get covered in germs) is…
…just before I wash my hands with their soap that kills 99% of all known germs!
Incidentally how do I turn the water on without infecting (or getting infected by) the tap?

Did I imply that marketing is obliged to be responsible? I was merely making the observation. I think some marketeers do behave more responsibly and do not always target the weakest links.
Ahem…. I was agreeing with you! 😉

Funnily enough I did wonder exactly the same thing when I first saw this advert you are referring to…but to pose a question that probably the marketing execs would say to you in response…how would your automatic soap dispenser get infested if all you’re doing is placing your hand underneath the dispensing device and getting a squirt of anti-bacterial gel onto your palm?

And what makes you think that marketing is obliged to be responsible?
We wouldn’t see so many adverts targetted at kids if that were the case.

Irrational targeting of irrational obsessions doesn’t sound like responsible marketing to me.

Exactly what I’ve always thought. Reminds me of those genius couple of sketches in That Mitchell and Webb Look where they are toothbrush inventors and are boasting about getting people to buy toothbrushes with a rubber ‘tongue brush’ on the other side of the brush. They then go on to decide they will be able to sell a toothbrush with a knife on the other end if they tell people they need it 😀

It depends if you have OCD or a thing about germs.
Possibly one of the things that has an effect on the number of people with an irrational fear of ‘germs’ is this sort of advertising…
…there are germs everywhere – FACT! Well, yes there are but our own immune systems will cope with almost all of them.
…we all suffer more and more from various bugs and allergies is because our lives are so sanitised.
It wasn’t so much the over-emphasis on sterilisation that bothered me about this advertisement rather the need for an automatic soap dispenser…
…after all if you’d just got germs on your hand from using a non-automatic soap dispenser hadn’t you used the non-automatic soap dispenser because you were just about to wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap?
So where’s the problem that an automatic soap dispenser is solving?

” A bit of dirt never killed anyone” my nan use to say.
Not 100% true obviously but you get the point!

Thanks CD – yes indeed. One of the reasons we all suffer more and more from various bugs and allergies is because our lives are so sanitised.:( The old adage does indeed have some truth to it!
