[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-01-03 AT 11:49 PM (GMT)]Do you think that these sides should come together, and put the past behind them, enabling both Sides to enter the EU?

Your thoughs on the topic…and please try not to start a Flame war!!!

RE: North and South Cyprus?

Sorry JT, I was speaking in the vain of there not being a settlement. In that case, I don’t think anyone will really deny that many Turkish Cypriots will leave for good, possibly to Turkey, but more likely western Europe.

If there is a settlement, under Annan’s plan, about 80,000 Greeks would return to about 8% of the north, and a large number of Turkish settlers would return to Turkey.

RE: North and South Cyprus?

As soon as the Turkish Anatolian settlers leave the island, and the 200,000+ Greek Cypriots who were expelled can return to their homes in the north, then the sky is the limit for Cyprus.

As it stands though, the Turkish military (the real power broker) is 100% behind Denktash and his hard line no compromise stance. I don’t see the Turkish north (or more precisely, Turkey) accepting the U.N’s plan as the Greeks have. So February 28 will come and go and the Greek part of Cyprus will join the EU as the recognized government. Turkey can then kiss the pipe dream of EU membership goodbye and might be forced into becoming the 51st U.S state.

The Greek Cypriots will get even more rich while the Turkish Cypriots (the real ones, not the settlers) will all but vacate the north in search of real lives elsewhere. Ironically, the ones who will win the most are probably the Germans+French who do not want Turkey in the EU (this will give them a reason to say ‘NO’), and Poland who sees Turkey as an enemy in securing billions in EU aid.

RE: North and South Cyprus?

30000 Cypriots didn’t fight World War II in Greece against the Nazi’s just so the rest of the so-called civilised world can then tell them to put up with unwelcome visitors who have settled on their lands with the sole intention of Turkish colonial expansionism, by force or whatever other means.

There is a bullet-holed Trident civilian airliner on Nicosia IA runway that will atest quite well to the Turkish concept of “peace-operation” – lets bomb and strafe the hell out of anyone, civilian or military, cover the whole lot up with mass-burials and then unleashs waves upon waves of propoganda saying its was the Cypriots fault in the first place.

RE: North and South Cyprus?

well if the people of the norht fell threatened by the south (fair enough) then create a federation where the northern state has its rights protected

there need be no trans island bodies just a state in name only – then you have a united island

then with peace you withdraw the huge turkish and un presence and then cut back the sotuehrn military – the benifits to the economy of reduced military spending will be great – also the toursit trade cold increase

then over time a customs federation, single currency, etc, etc could be created

now the northern peoepl are poorer than the south and will wnat the economic benifits whihc is the carrot the south should offer them – the south will then reap the rewards of peace, morpe touristy space, cheap labour, etc, etc
