North and South Korea clash yet again

I heard very briefly yesterday that North Korea has fired on South Korean naval ships. Does anyone know any details of the engagement?

btw, KJLost, the radar on the PKX, what is it? It does seem to be related to the land based phased array by ADD.

I agree with what you wrote but I still think RAM (or some SAM / Anti-missile system) is important in modern day combat. If one of these new ships had a couple of North Korean Silkworm missiles locked on it I bet the Captain would disagree with you and would want a SEA RAM system available to him. I know I would.

This class of ship is built for the purpose of engaging most gun armed NK patrol crafts which is typical involving in protecting NK’s fishing fleet. If a missile armed FAC is detected, I doubt a gun only patrol boat will be send by SK.

Just the same old pot shots across the bow………As the North Korean Navy would last only a couple days against the very capable and Powerful South Korean Navy! IMO :diablo:

I think thats why the South Koreans are building Aegis cruisers.;) As yet, at least to the best of my knowledge the North Koreans have not yet fired an AShM at an SK ship. As long as these new vessels have the ability to be upgraded should this situation change I dont think there is a issue. Also the silkworm is not exactly a clever missile, with a decent fire control system the 40mm should be perfectly capable of dealing with them.

In fact the nature of the engagements that NK/SK usually fight the gun armament will be far more important than the missiles. In fact there may not even be that much use for RAM.

If you look at the role this ships will be undertaking they are perfectly suitable. In fact the nature of the engagements that NK/SK usually fight the gun armament will be far more important than the missiles. In fact there may not even be that much use for RAM.

No export potential

KJ,

I understand and totally agree with everything you wrote. I am just surprised how conventional the design is in this day of age. Some stealth features wouldn’t have cost that much more. This design is just as conventional as the Po Hang Class Corvette that was built 25 years earlier. I just wish they added some stealth features.

The current plan is to build 40 of these crafts, 16 of it SSM-armed and 24 gun-only.

The 24 gun only ships. Will they be fitted for but not with SSM or will they not even be fitted? Will there just be an empty spot were the SSM are located or will they add some other equipment?

This is a low-cost littoral defense craft. Stealthier design, SAM, even a new gun was dropped in favor is lowering the cost. The current plan is to build 40 of these crafts, 16 of it SSM-armed and 24 gun-only.

These crafts will replace the current PCC corvettes and the PKM fast-attack crafts. Our primary close-in fighters against the North Korean navy.

good but not great!

This ship looks good and has a good weapons fit minus a SAM system. I would have tried to fit the SEA RAM some where. however, I am disappointed on how conventional the design is. I was expecting something a lot more stealthy from the South Koreans.

I haven’t heard anything. Even if something so much as a rifle shot had been fired between ships, it should have been on the news. I don’t see anything.

Anything I’ve heard that might be remotely related is the news that the PKX-A, the first of the next-generation fast-attack missile boats, will be named Yoon Young Ha. The official news was released yesterday.

This is a significant statement against North Korea. Lt. Commander Yoon Young Ha was the commander of the Chamsuri-357, which was involved in the naval engagement 5 years ago. He and 5 others lost their lives in the engagement when the Chamsuri 357 was sunk.

PKX-A will be launched in the 28th of this month, a day before the 5th anniversary of the West Sea engagement with the families of the fallen in attendance.

Any images or specs for the PKX-As?
