Went along today as a guest of one of the based operators. Weather wasn’t great, and participation and action wasn’t overwhelming either, but it was an OK couple of hours out.
A shame when you consider what’s based there – could have been so much more. JJ and the new Spit didn’t leave their hangar. Many thanks to Richard for his hospitality, and for letting me get so close to the action.
Afew pics….

Jumpin Jacques landed just before me at around 1225 on Saturday at North Weald. A Cub on base leg had to orbit to let him in.

Anyone have any more info about this weekends fly-in? Just had something Merlin powered over the house – are there many warbirds expected? Admission prices?
TIA
What I assumed to be Princess Elizabeth flew low over my house at about 15:30 yesterday afternoon heading south, it was so perfectly positioned directly overhead that I couldn’t tell whether it was a C or a D, however the engine note was different than the usual P-51, my missus thought it was well impressive, of course we had to do the usual quote from Empire Of The Sun, ‘P-51,cadillac of the skies’ etc, well it was very hot yesterday, not good for merlins either.
So what and where was it going.

Probably Jumpin Jacques. It was out to the east for a while. It’s the Air Britain fly in over the weekend. Had eight Stearmans today and a rare Navion. Mostly GA types, though rather than heavy metal! Not sure of entrance fees as I get in for free as a Squadron member, about a tenner I think. The Spit should be flying tomorrow.

Thanks anyway, I was amazed how few people there were at the event, but then again I’d not seen any publicity for the event. Shame really.

Sorry mate, I didn’t. I was in a JP when they arrived, and I left before they did.

I stopped to see Rich land then went home via McD’s at Jct7 on the M11! No P-51’s for me damn it!

Did you catch the Mustangs landing or had you gone before then? I went back to see Richard before the Mustangs came in, and I sat in the cockpit just after he shut down and climbed out. 🙂

Good P-51 shots Dan, I went to the runway end to see Richard land on in the JP T5P.

Thank you Damien! I’m still not sure about those ‘WW2 re-enacters types’ though!

Arrived at just after 11.00 missing the arrival of the Hurricane and Hairyplane’s pair. Nice to the the Ryan, thanks Peter.
After that it sort of went dead making me think I had wasted my time and money, apart from the Gnat and Jet Provest activity. But It did get a bit better with unlimited access to the Hurricane and the arrival of the Mustangs. Also I must say a big thankyou to Tim Manna for allowing a few of us a look in his usually private hanger and to Peter Tiechman for letting us see his new toy ie PL965.
I did think about leaving early but am glad I stayed for Clive Denney’s superb display in the Hurricane.
Altogether not a bad day out.

Weald Weather
I must admit that we were a bit concerned about bringing the Magister and Ryan over from Old Warden on consideing the worsening weather picture and strengthening, blustery crosswinds at each end.
We couldn’t let Ken Ellis down though could we?!
My original plan was to return the Ryan to my home Shotteswell strip in view of the work starting on the Old Warden runway next week.
However, having tucked the Maggie away at OW I got as far as some horrible squalls near Turweston, figured that Shotteswell would have a 90 degree, well out of limits crosswind so didn’t bother to even try it.
The PT is now safely tucked away in the hangar at Turweston. As it turns out, my aircraft features on the front cover of the programme for their Vintage Flyin next weekend and they pleaded with me to let them keep it anyway as a static. As I’m off to Reno next week it seemed rude not to!
Shame about the weather guys – it will come good one year!
