I haven’t been to North Weald for some years now, but when last there I went to the gate and asked the guards about getting in and travelling over to the Squadron. I gained entry and thankfully got a ride across the field from an r/c chap who was on his way there. Whats the story these days, do one get in there or are we talking Fort Knox security as on so many other airfields?

Thanks to everyone who has replied on this thread. I will be in the UK from tomorrow evening until Thursday evening, so I just wanted to check if it was any point going up to North Weald. Don’t plan on any longer trips this time. From the feedback so far it looks as though I will make the journey up there to check it out, even though I wear a hooded sweater… :dev2: I will however leave the torch at home for this journey and not even think of the dodgy doggy stuff…:D

I was there a couple of days ago – I just drove through the gate, nobody stopped me, nobody asked any questions.
I just downloaded the map on the Squadron website and drove round the outside.

Ahh i see, i always say the squadron even if im going to another hangar.
And if my first reply came accross as a bit heavy it wasnt ment to be. I was just listing possible reasons as to having security. Living around north weald i know of some very dodgy stuff that goes on. I wasnt trying to scare anyone away as i was generalising for every airfield in the country.
North weald is a fantastic place to go, and the squardon does pretty good food, its certainly recomended 🙂
Cheers

No problems for me either last year- I was there on business (Staggerwing C of A renewal) and very helpful security staff.
I would recommend anyone thinking of visiting to get advance permission from whoever you are going to see, and always keep a good lookout when driving on the taxiways. Also stop and look up and around at the runway threshold, even if you don’t see anything…just good practice really.

I was there in 06 and there was no real problem. Didn’t know the taxis could go down the entire thing so we got out at the gate. Some chap on a break said he could drive us to the squadron and so he did. Very grateful for such great service.

How often does this destruction occur at Weald then ?
Is there a blanket ban on press coverage ?

The Crime rate is much lower in Norfolk, we can leave the aircraft out on the grass in front of the hangar without the fear that some hooded chav will start driving up and down the runway, trash the aircraft and torch the buildings.
We can’t 🙁

So…. Bruce…. are you admitting to going to North Weald so as you can drive up and down the runway and vandalise the buildings??? :p
By: Bruce - 21st January 2009 at 07:39
I always just drive up to the gate and say I’m going to the squadron – even if I’m not!
668 – calm down – anyone would think you ran the place.

TJ, there shouldn’t be a problem at the gate. Tell them you want to visit The Squadron. If you are arriving by taxi, it can drive you round. It’s a long walk, though some people like the exercise.
The phone number of the Squadron is 01992 524 510 if you want to check if anything is going on. We have some great aircraft based on the field and you never know what may be flying apart from the “spammies”.
Best to avoid Saturdays because of the market.

I dont quite understand the question as you might have made a spelling or grammatical error but if ive thought about it right heres my answer.
The reason north weald has the security is to stop members of the general public driving across the airfield. They could cause a danger to there selfs, people on the airfield and aircraft. Airfields are very dangerous places and you dont want people driving up and down the runway for a laugh. Or generally causing a nuisance. Also there are lots of private buildings be it aviation related or not. North weald has a domestic side and an aviation side. The company directors don’t want people walking around the premises, and might what a decent rate if security depending on what they do. Also aircraft are very expensive things even small 2 seat Cessna’s let alone spits and hunters. If members of the general public do get on to the airfield they could vandalise aircraft of there buildings or touch a sensitive part of the aircraft. That’s why there’s such security at north weald and other uk airfields.
They do a good job down at north weald and generally the people going onto the airfield now how to move and drive around an airfield
Hope this is what you asked, if not just ignore me 🙂
Cheers

I can see now why I haven’t flown into North Weald for a few years. The Crime rate is much lower in Norfolk, we can leave the aircraft out on the grass in front of the hangar without the fear that some hooded chav will start driving up and down the runway, trash the aircraft and torch the buildings. Sounds like North Weald is a mega scary place these days.

Hi 668
My question was simply, can one still gain access to the airfield? Since my first visit there in 1986 I’ve never had any problems getting in, has that changed?
When I lived at Chino close to twenty years ago access (or lack thereof) was not even an issue. When I was back this fall it was a little harder. Whiteman Airpark, Schellville and Hollister was not.
