Northern Long Haul Rumour

Can anyone add any serious rumour of long haul flights from the North of England?

With the excpetion of Manchester, there are hardly any long haul flights from other North of England airports. There are two Orlando flights from Newcastle this year, and, we also have the Transat Toronto stuff. But nothing else.

I did hear sometime ago that there was a possibility of a New York service starting from Newcastle but haven’t heard anything since.

Teesside, Liverpool, Leeds/Bradford and Humberside all have nothing. Newcastle has nothing else to shout about. What are the chances of further long haul activity starting up around here and has anyone heard anything on this, charter or scheduled?

(I get frustrated having to travel to Manchester if I want a direct flight anywhere!):(

Lack of capabilities at these airports is part of the reason. They all have short runways and no (or few) jetties.

There is also loads of space at Manchester, so why divide your market?

Also, for short hauls you can rely on point to point traffic. For long hauls, you need connecting traffic as well. LHR is very good for that and to a lesser extent so is MAN. The other airports don’t even begin to be competitive. Look at MAN’s long haul flight; only a few are point to point. Most offer connections, which is why they can be viable. Emirates, Singapore, US Airways…

Most of Scotland get’s frustrated at having to travel to MAN for so many flights as well. At least we have a few long haulers out of Glasgow but most of the Scots I know going trans-atlantic, route through MAN or LHR.
