Norwegian airfields during the 1930s

Dear members,

I am looking for information regarding the existing airfields around the Oslo area in the middle of the 1930s. The information I have is that the main airfield was Kjeller. Also Gardermoen existed in that time. Were there anyone else?

Regards,
Sven-Eric

Welcome to the forum Sven-Eric. I’m sorry that I can’t help you but I wish you luck in your quest. Your query is even more obscure than most of those I initiate! I know that there are some Scandinavian forum members so hopefully either they can help you or point you in the direction in which the answer may be found.

Norwegian airports pre Fornebu ain’t my field of knowledge either I’m afraid. U sure Gardermoen was around? I was of the impression the Germans buildt the airfield first, but I’m most likely mistaken.

I know there was one..but the name escapes me. It was our official airport before Fornebu. The place is all forgotten from what I read somewhere, and no one seems interested in keeping this historic field in good shape. So sorry I don’t remember where it was.

Hi Sven-Eric,

noting that your last activity in this forum took place after your question was answered and without any posts in this thread, allow me to post the first line of a well-known Danish song which – judging from your first name – I’m sure you’ll understand:

“Tak er kun et fattigt ord…”

On Google Earth it is stated that Eggemoen was an airfield before WWII. But I don’t think that is accurate since from what I know Eggemoen was built by the Germans.

Eggemoen was built by Russian POWs during the war and was supposed to be used for re-deployment of fighter groups. This never happened as the field wasn’t ready until late in the war. It was however used as a maintenance base for fighters. There was apparently also both transports and spotter planes based there.

Thanks

Dear members, thank you so much for the replies. Much appreciated. Unfortunately I lost my login and could not access this forum for several months. But now it seems to be working again.

I know that Gardermoen had an airfield in the 1930s although only a small one from what I have heard. On Google Earth it is stated that Eggemoen was an airfield before WWII. But I don’t think that is accurate since from what I know Eggemoen was built by the Germans.

I read in a Norwegian book from 1938 that the Norwegian Air Force had some winter exercises in various places from the 1910s and up to WWII. Does anyone know what they did during these exercises?

Finally, does anyone have an e-mail address to Bjorn Hafsten?

Best wishes,
Sven-Eric
