Well, perhaps yesterday is right, anyway, the boat was launched in Ferrol, north west spain. It´s an aegis equipped frigate , in the line of the spanish navy F-100 series. Sadly, the event took place without ceremony because of the tragic death of 4 workers at this boat on may 11 in an accident related to lack of oxygen in a tank.
Frigate´s manufacturer NAVANTIA is going to hand over the ship to the royal norwegian navy on september 2006, but about 60 norwegian sailors and officers have arrived at Ferrol with a support boat to start training on the ship.
A few pics

Also , it was announced from the goverment that a fifth F-100 frigate is going to be built, and four “maritime action ships”. I have no idea of what “maritime action ship” stands for , but from the press I´ve read and the fact that they are intended to substitute the Baleares series´ frigates (american Knox design) I guess they are some kind of small frigates.
A combat support ship has been approved too, and 45 NH-90s , about half of them will be for the navy and the marine corps.

That would be Marjata. The RNoN will appreciate that you called it a research ship… 😉

The Marjata hull design serves three strategic purposes, each of which are perfectly suited to marine seismic acquisition:
Minimal vessel noise enters the water, providing a “stealth” technology
A seismic acquisition experiment desires the recording of only the seismic energy reflected back from the geological strata in the Earth. Interference noise from the vessel is an historical problem in the seismic industry
The wide back deck provides an extremely flexible and safe platform for deploying equipment, personnel, and machinery (including helicopters)
The hull design allows 20 full streamer reels to be maintained across the back deck, enabling safe and efficient handling, deployment, and towing with unmatched flexibility. Streamers can be towed at separations between 37.5 and 150.0 meters
The vessel stability is excellent at the stern, providing minimal pitch and roll
Vessel movements are negligible, avoiding “tugging” on the towing equipment. Vessel tug is an establish source of unwanted noise problems on standard vessels. Due to the Ramform vessel stability, very large numbers of streamers can be deployed at very close separations, without the classical risks of handling and towing problems

Thanks Terran, I have seen this ship on TV for some reason, did it attend the Kursk disaster?

Does anyone have pics or info about a Norwegian research ship that has a length to beam ratio of 2:1.

I’m not sure if it is a navy ship but it looks very unusual.

“Maritime Action Ship” (BAM in Spanish) will be an OPV of aproximately 2.500 t, 22-23 n, NH-90/SH-60 capable, 1 76 mm gun an a couple of MG. Wont be a “Combat ship”.
The project is building up to 12 for patrol duties, in order to replace diferent kinds of smaller patrol boats in spanish service, and 4 more miscellaneous (1 dive support vessel, 1 signal collection and 2 oceanographics) in a modular basis.
The substitutes of the 5 Baleares are the 4 (now 5 and probably 6) F-100.

The Fridtjof Nansen class frigates are among the best looking surface combatants in the world.
