Not a civie clock but there is something I need to know

Ok, shortly after 9/11 an airliner exploded over New York City. Due to the fact that it was one or two days after 9/11 and the media wanted to downplay it very little information was posted by the media (in the UK at least).
Can anyone shed some light on this cos for some bloody reason it’s been gnawing at me recently, so far I’ve had two dreams about it and the damn image of falling debris keeps flicking into my mind….no I ain’t claiming I’m having premonitions but I have a weird desire to know more about this ill fated flight.
If I remember, it was Italian and had something to do with an exploding engine

I have looked on the net but haven’t found anything!!! 😮 Maybe I haven’t looked hard enough

Any help will be appreciated 🙂

I remember that day, my mum was due to be coming back from NYC same day. as a result she was delayed for 31 hours.

It was an unfortunate even, especially in the recent light of the 9/11 attacks

Didnt one loose an engine on takeoff which was found in a street?? Or did it crash as part of loosing engine thing?

Miami rings a bell…

This one (AA587) lost it’s vertical stabilizer due to full deflection of the rudder attributed to wake turbulance from a previously departed 747

Discovery Wings occasionally broadcasts the “Air Crash Investigation” programme dedicated to this accident.

I can’t recall an “Aircrash Investigation” on this flight but there is a program dedicated to it, I have it recorded on DVD if anyone want’s it

I might be, it’s odd though because I remember seeing footage of an aircraft exploding in mid-air over New York and something to do with it being Italian.
Maybe I’m getting mixed up with something else but I know there were people looking up at the sky and I remember wreckage being filmed on New York city streets.
I must be going crazy, but like I said I have been remembering it in my head for some reason and I know it happened. It couldn’t have been a crash on take off because it was something that happened mid-air!!!

U know, joking apart this is gonna freak me out if something happens to an Italian airliner over New York sometime soon!!!

I’m gonna check and see if I can dig anything up!!!

Are you mixing up the AA A300 crash that the guys have mentioned with the light aircraft that a teenager flew into a Milan office building at around the same time, IIRC.

It was the American Airlines Airbus A300-600R as posted by Future Pilot, bound for Santo Domingo. I remember it because the Dominican Republic was a popular holiday destination back then (for me anyway). 😎

The only incident that springs to mind for me is flight AA587 that crashed after take-off from JFK.
