Not again!

That’s what you’ll all be saying about my posts soon. I’m trawling for information again. Thing is I’ve just been on holiday for a week in NE Scotland (Dornoch) and found out about 3 WWII airfields which I have no info on (never even knew they existed until last Monday).
Any info anyone can provide would be welcome.

The airfields are:
Tain
Fearn
Alness.

As far as I can make out the only one with any of the original infrastructure remaining is RAF Tain, possibly due to the fact that they have a bombing range there now.
Cheers all
Mike.

Well, since RAF Alness was home to 4 (C) OTU’s flying boats, I suppose the runway is still there :diablo:

Seriously, I had a wander round there last summer and a lot of the hangars used the by the flying boats are still there, together with a few concrete structures by the firth. Close by is the land runway that, IIRC was under the different name of RAF Evanton (HMS Fieldfare) It shows up well on Google Earth (57 39 59N 4 18 28W)

But its not my home turf so others with more knowledge will tell you more about what survives.

Allan

Sorry I think you misunderstood me, I was referring to Tain’s runways. From the reports there is not much left of Alness.

Evanton/Tain/Fearn

If you haven’t already done so, try Action Stations Vol 7 by David J Smith and published by PSL.

Evanton is shown clearly in several of my air views, use the Search gallery feature
www.scotaviaimages.co.uk

Fearn does have a usuable runway for light aircraft. There are moves afoot to establish a flying club there.

Some of the original Alness buildings survive and you can see what is on the site now by looking at my air views, mostly new build business buildings.

RAF Evanton is near Alness… Google Earth has them listed as Coastal Command, 817/816sqdn etc

The best site I have seen for this sort of thing is

http://www.controltowers.co.uk

It would help if they had a map, region by region rather than just the alphabetical list. You have to know the name of the airfield to look it up.

We have a site over here with maps-region by region. Over 250 airfields in Florida alone, many of which have been swallowed up by development or gone back to farming.

Thanks for the link, very helpful. There are still a few air raid shelters on the land that has returned to agriculture though, over the years, the grass and soil has washed off until now there is only about 2-3 feet at the bottom of the roof arch. Also the runways appeared to be in reasonable state after so long without care or repair.
