Not allowed to call VJ day VJ day in Tasmania

From the ABC:

VP Day labelled too politically correct
The Tasmanian branch of the RSL has slammed use of the name Victory in the Pacific Day for the anniversary of the end of World War II.

RSL state president Ian Kennett says ‘VP day’ is a politically correct name invented by the Government to protect trade links with Japan.

He says VJ Day should still apply.

“The veterans I think are let down, they fought the Japanese and that’s who they fought, not the Pacific,” he said.

“The Japanese capitulated after the two atomic bombs were detonated over Japan and most veterans are of the belief it should remain VJ day.

“It’s just one of those things, I think political correctness has come on board and they’re [Japan] probably one of our biggest trade partners and I think people in some government areas have decided to make it VP day and not VJ day.

Political correctness strikes again 😡

Tempting.

Anyway, here (in NZ) I’ve always heard of VE and VJ as the labels, but lately have noticed VP creeping into use. Obviously VP is aligned to VE so the situation may be more about alignment of terminology than PC’ness.

What intrigues me more is the various commemorations taking place now (in July). What’s that all about? I know there was discussion (in Historic) about the July date and I dismissed it as of no particular interest to me as it seemed to be some UK or European political/convenience thing. Abhorrent, but not affecting me. But now we’ve also had commemorations including young Prince William doing his first solo Royal Tour and laying wreaths etc. Will we also remember in August?

I didn’t hear about that, I’m from Tassie. Personally I’ve always known it as VP and VE isn’t VG Day so I don’t really understand why they are cracking up a fuss. I fully respect the RSL but the Tasmanian RSL does come out with some weird comments sometimes.

Nice to know that the UK is not the only place that suffers from overbearing politicial correctness. Most of the the things the pc crowd complain about are things no one except themselves find upsetting.
