Not strictly speaking a "flight" sim…

..but I’ve realised you can have oodles of fun flying the various planes in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas!!

If you manage to acquire the R/C model shop, you can access a bonus mission called “Beefy Baron”, where you fly a miniature machine gun-armed biplane(!) and shoot up as many vans as possible in the alloted time! Or, of course, you can just strafe everything in sight! :diablo:

Then of course there is the warbird lookalike that you fly from the old airbase, the Learjet lookalike, the Ag Cat (called the Cropduster for obvious reasons) the Cessna-thingy and, if you manage to get a good enough score in flight school, the Pitts Special-type biplane. There’s also two cargo-type planes that you can pinch – and one bears more than a passing resemblance to a Dakota!! 😀

Great fun, especially trying to dodge SAMs in the Dak! 😀

Go to Los Santos International, and there you’ll be able to fly a DC-3, a Shamal (bizjet) and Cessna’s among others.

Going back to the original topic, the closest to FS I’ve found on the PS2 lately is a daft helicopter game call ‘Air Ranger Rescue’, worth looking out for if only because you can find copies in the bargain bins for around a fiver.

I agree, and you can certainly see the difference that two or three years makes in between Medal of Honor: Frontline and Medal of Honor: Underground. (OK, they’re on different formats, but it shows the development of similar titles well).

How many years since the PS2 came out? Five?

It’s a good point Daz, and although the recent PS2 games still look good they DO show the age of the hardware. I’ve recently played the Ghost Recon series on the PS2, great fun but no comparison to more recent first person shooters on the PC. A good PC costs more but you get a lot more for your money.

Dave, if you have a PS2, I thoroughly recommend Secret Weapons Over Normandy – it’s like Medal of Honor, but in the air! 😀

What annoys me is you constantly have to update a PC to keep in the running with the new stuff – with a console, OK it dates after a while, but you only need to buy a console once. How many years since the PS2 came out? Five?

Games and graphics do advance for console formats, but not to the point where you need superior this, that and the other to make them work!

Actually, thinking about it, I would really like to see RockStar Games do a flight sim for the PS-2, along the lines of Secret Weapons over Normandy (my all-time fave flying game on console formats), with the simple flying controls they use in GTA:SA. I mean, if the Rustler had a proper in-cockpit view, and a way of allowing you to see around you (like in the Ace Combat series), it’d be even better!

The R/C Baron is stupidly easy to fly, manoeuvres like hell, and has guns – what more could you want?? 😀

HERE, HERE, not my usual forum as this pc is older that fuller to run flight sims,so the idea to have a half decent one on the ps2 would be nice,I keep an eye on this forum to see what you guys are flying and whats new ,there is some prity impressive sims about now,the last i flew was the airbus a320 on the amiga.

EH?! 😮 I’ve never seen that mission, and I’ve damn-near completed the game!

I have definitely seen the Sea King at Las Venturas Airport – it’s usually parked near the two Cessnas.

Oooh, haven’t seen the 737! 😉

Let’s not forget the Hydra (Harrier wannabe).

I’ve not seen the Sea King at the base, but I think it is at the airport in Las Venturas.

There’s a seaplane somewhere, too, as well as a float-fitted chopper right at the top someplace. I’d have to go exploring again to find them both.
