As some of you (who remember me) will recall, I had planned to write a novel on a possible conflict in South America over either oil or the Falklands between Britain and a fictional South American alliance. Just when I was gearing up to start writing, some prat went and published his own novel about an Argentine re-invasion, so there went that idea!!!
Never mind eh???
Okay so here is the latest idea (just don’t laugh).
How about a “Firefox” type story in which Russia develops a new weapon (in this case an under water fighter/interceptor built to replace the SSK and SSN fleets). The CIA first come upon the project when a they witness what appears to be the crash of a new fighter in the Black Sea, only to watch as the “wreckage” is recovered several hours later…300 miles away.
Several days later the British SSN “Astute”s sonars detect several submerged high speed objects off the coast of Finland.
Confused, Britain and the US decide to investigate further by sending several agents to obtain information on this “Black Project” which threatens to render NATO’s modern navies vulnerable, with no way of countering the weapon.
Opinions???

Ummm, that´s very similar to a computer game “Red Alert”, in which someone travels to the past to kill Hitler and so to avoid WWII, when he returns there´s a global war in Europe between the Soviet Union and The Allies. It is a very cool game, the second part of of “command & conquer” in fact.

Sounds great, but not original, since as you point out, Clancy curls the curl all the time. What about a time shift…a time machine in which a present day german goes back to the time of the WW2, alters the reality and make the nazis to win. Then comes back to present time, in a complete changed world. Time shifts could be done to the future, too.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-10-02 AT 06:02 PM (GMT)]Hi Flanker,
Have a look at an author called Michael DiMercurio’s work. He’s done stuff very similar to what your thinking of…his works’ not that marvellous but may be worth a look at as to see what to avoid!.
Other than that the idea is fairly novel (if you forgive the pun!) and lets face it Dale Brown’s “Day of the Cheetah” was a rip-off of FireFox but with the protaganists reversed and no-one seemed to mind that. I certainly never heard of Craig Thomas sueing Brown!!!
Youre going to have to do some studying on naval systems for this one to have any kind of credibility though! A 300knt sub-fighter would not be able to use any kind of passive accoustic sensors through the tremendous flow noise that would be generated, for example, so you’d have to look at, perhaps, some kind of advanced blue-green LIDAR system for sensors. You’d have lots of difficulties ejecting torpedoes out of conventional tubes at 300knts…….the hydrodynamics that allow such a speed would probably not aid surface stability so you may need, perhaps, inflatable pontoons to provide stability when surfaced…etc….etc…etc.
Good luck and happy reading!.

RE: Novel trouble….again
Hi GeForce, long time no…ehh, reply.
I guess that’s the problem with writing these days, every idea has already been taken. Dale Brown, Tom Clancy and Coontz are even running out of ideas, they keep writing about China invading Taiwan or Russia (“The Bear and the Dragon”).
This idea of mine may seem a little bit like a “Firefox” rip off, but what can I do?
Anyhow…it’s an idea, and that’s a start! :7

Why don’t you write a story of a brave American Marine pilot who saved the earth from alien supression on the national holiday? Oops been taken. }>
