It’s true. It seems that for some people their life isn’t complete unless the room they are in has a television flickering away, often largely ignored in some corner or other.

We own one set. It is hidden away in a chimney alcove, and turned on (Never before about 7.15pm – except wet weekends) for specific programmes, then turned off again.

But we all get our enjoyment in different ways, so I guess if repeat second rate dramas, ‘celebrity’ programmes or (god preserve us) breakfast television is their thing, who am I to carp?

No sadder I suppose than the people who must number tens of thousands if not more who inhabit the lengthening list of digital repeat channels. Endless repeats of second rate drama and documentary and comedy, with occasional exceptions, clearly satisfies huge numbers of saddos.

I bet most will watch repeats of the old Clarkson trio until something else comes along.

I am sure both May and Hammond will make new series of their own idiosyncratic programmes for the BBC.

I’ll probably give the new show a chance and see how it goes, but I think the problem will be how to pitch, deliver the show?
The original Top Gear was a motoring programme but got stale very quickly. So they turned it into a comic car show with Clarkson and gang. It works, to a degree. But not because of the cars.
If they create a new show will they make it a serious car prog or a comedy one?
Serious car prog = boring. Comedy = irrelevant.

Give James Mae more money and do some more `Maes incredible stuff` shows. Like the one where they sent Action Man into space. Epic!

No, still pay for the licence, but at 40p/day I count that as near free as to make no odds.

More likely one massive ego trying to compete with its predecessors huge ego. Having met Evans, shortly after he tried (and failed) to sue Virgin Radio for sacking him (for repeatedly failing to turn up for work and claiming he was sick whilst still going on pub crawls – followed by the press who were invariably invited along), my opinion (whether you want it or not) is that he has always thought himself to be a media version of King Midas, but without the bad points. He has a habit of being enthusiastic about his projects but then losing interest in them when they have been running for a while, making demands to see how far he can push, before parting company with it. This trait even includes relationships and pets…

Just my opinion, as I said.

Several million already have and maybe a few million more will follow with this announcement as well as the other programmes Amazon Prime are planning. So perhaps not as small a minority’s as you might think. Subscription TV will become the norm in the next few years.

Whichever way you look at it JC and co are now signed up to a minority channel, whether enough people will be induced to paying for it is another issue, I know that I most certainly will not be one of them.

Well were on a run here Moggy ref post 7 I totally agree about Dr Who….:eagerness: As for Top Gear just like you I will give it a watch but will expect a few teething problems during the 1st series but given Chris Evens success in other media shows he knows what the petrol heads want being one himself.
I would think the biggest obstacle in his path is JC’s enormous shadow, if he can get out of that with a better show then it should be good if not then the show will ultimately fail sadly because he will give it his all, I suppose another hurdle will be to woo the TG fans and keep them watching rather than investing Netflix ?

Yes. But I made that mistake before, writing off the revived Dr Who as it had the airhead (as I thought) ex-Mrs Chris Evans in it. But in fact that series was beyond doubt the best ever.

It’s only right to give it a chance. But my expectations are not high.
