NPPL restrictions

Do you think that the current regulations that allow an NPPL student to gain his or her NPPL are to high? For example I have had a few buddys at my flying club say that some of the exams which are also used in the PPL should not be required and that being restricted to U.K airspace is stupid. Talks of allowing NPPL pilots to visit france is going ahead and I think NPPL holders will soon be able to visit France.

Im sure some of you lot have gone to and from Alderney, and Jersey during your time as aviators so what are the duty free prices like. How much booze do you load your plane up with?

I was thinking that if you fly out in a c172/pa-28 as the only person on the aircraft with the required fuel for the destination, and your 45min reserve thats got to be a hell of a lot of wine and cigars.

My father knows a man who was a plumber and gave it all up to go into flying, he owns and operates his own Arrow, and I think he makes his living from flying out to France and Jersey buying cheap booze and fags and then selling the back to the u.k at large whole-salers. He doe’s this all legally and pays the V.A.T and im just pondering how much he needs to fly to make a living, take into consideration that he is a PPL holder and he is not making any money from the flying and the fuel and the landing fees are costing him his profits.

Some people might say why nou use a van, but then again what is the fun in that even if you do save a bit of money, he looks as if he makes a comftable living, he drives around in an MG and always seams to be going on holiday.

He has asked my father if I would like to come on a trip with him, and well you all know what I said, he said I can do most of the flying so Im quite happy to go, and it wont cost me a penny. I will make sure I bring back some duty free for myslef.

But really, even if you remove the rear seats, their is only so much booze and fags that you can load up, bottles of wine are not light. How many can you load up I ponder, I will have to go and work it out? Loading up cigars and fags is simple for the reason that they are small and light.

It must be a hell of a way to make a living, I know he varies his trips to keep it fun, flying the same route every day can become a drag so he says, so he varies his flights. I understand he has quite a large contract with a couple of very large whole-salers. I was told that he is flying about five hours a week.

Both – just by being present you would most likely be regarded as guilty by association

Surely they’re not selling PPLs on a commission-only basis? Robert – now’s your chance!!;) 😉

Then again if people would give thier jobs up they would see what can be done, you have to be creative, then again my creactivity side goes when people start calling from c&a.

Sorry to P on your fire but your neck WOULD be on the line as well as you would be an accessory. If I were you I’d give that idea up whilst you’re still ahead.

IF your fathers mate is paying the duty on these fags and booze then there is no way he can justify the cost of flying a light aircraft overseas to get them. Be very careful what you say here because threads like this are very interesting to HM Customs and Excise. Once again, if this was a legitimate way of subsidising flying everyone would be at it. Continue to post about these things and expect a knock on your door.
