Wanted to put this into naval aviation, but probably too far a stretch. The NR-1 or ‘Nerwin’ was famous for recovering parts from the Challenger disaster and helping Robert Ballard discover the Britannic in the Mediterranean.
I would seem to be an unneccesary sacrifice of a valuable asset which should have had several years more life. As it was never officially commissioned in the US Navy, presumably it cannot be de-commissioned?

Was’nt Robert Ballard one of the officers aboard NR-1?
Ballard was given access to the NR1 under the “dual use” concept, but he was never operating crew.

I wonder what clandestine missions it has undertaken as I doubt such a sophisticated vessel would have been constructed for any other purpose and possibly that is why it was never commissioned into the US Navy?

It’s only 40 years old..yet the US Military still operates B52’s that were first introduced in 1952 and with no sign of retirement in the near future..go figure 😮

It has been in service for forty years which is pretty good for any submarine and I would suspect that refuelling the reactor would require major surgery, when it needs doing, plus there may be some safety issues with such an old craft.

Has a replacement been commissioned (or announced)?
