I found this photo among my father’s effects. It was in an envelope with ‘Christmas Island 1957’ written on it.
I believe that the Shackleton is VP263.

Indeed… VP263 was involved with Grapple according to google. Maybe this was mocked up as part of it’s involvement?

Picture is contrived, however Shackleton MR.1 VP263 was used on the ‘Grapple Y’ tests in the late ’50s, with 240 and 204 Sqn.

It does look rather retouched – when you compare the original photo taken during Operation Grapple and available off the net…

May be wrong, but this looks too contrived to be genuine : the aircraft seems to have been superimposed, and not too well, possibly has been produced as a souvenir in an RAF Photographic section on a base that may have had some involvement at the time.(IMHO). :rolleyes:
