Odd Short Stirling image

I was browsing through the images if Stirlings for a bit of research I’m doing and came across one of a Stirling with what looks like a star insignia. Russian.

Apologise if it is well know. Was new to me.

Quite correct Mahone, there’s more about it in our dedicated thread. With the current state of Russian/western relations I doubt that this story will be added to any time soon.

I seem to recall that the Stirling Project guys investigated fairly thoroughly a few years back, with help from Russian officials too, but couldn’t find any definite info on what became of it.

I suppose there is always a possibility but the chance of a Russian speaking Stirling Enthusiast with access to any possible archives over there is id imagine a bit slim!

Did they serve with any other obscure air forces.

Until I wrote that quote, I hadn’t appreciated that the Short Stirling was ‘later used by Avia Arktika’ – that’s Soviet Polar Aviation.

I also have no idea where it ended up – but I doubt that it was returned – maybe still lying abandoned somewhere covered in snow ?

The B-17’s and B-24’s were those that landed in Soviet or Yugoslav territory from bombing raids to Ploesti etc.

The B-24 was found particularly useful in training potential Tu-4 (B-29) pilots in the use of a nosewheel equipped aircraft.

“operational B-17 and B-24 “

Did not hear about those.
Know about B-25, PBY-6a (PBN), A-20’s, P-40, P-39

From ‘Lend-Lease Aircraft in Russia’ – Red Stars 4 published by Apali Oy of Finland….

“One Stirling B.III(serial LK615) arrived in Teheran 1 March 1945 for transfer to Soviet representatives. Because of various defects it was not accepted until 5 May 1945. It was evaluated in LII, but did not arouse any enthusiasm (the Soviets possesed already operational B-17 and B-24 bombers which were superior to the Stirling). It was later used by Avia-Arktika.
Note:- according to a Lend-Lease summary document of the HQ of the Soviet AF another three Stirlings were delivered to the Naval Air Forces. No further information is known about these aircraft.”

Then there was the operational Lancaster…..
