This is a good movie. Now, yes the movie industry did the “hollywood” thing and there are scenes in it for the sake of movie making. More important though is this, Ever read a lot of books on the Eastern Front (in this case, Stalingrad)? I have. Ever want to understand visually what the tractor factory looked like? How about the famous department store? This movie captures what Stalingrad must have looked like. Like all the books you ever read on it just came to life. Scary. Unbelieveable.
Hardware; very accurate. For the first time (besides old photos) I saw German MKIII tanks. (J’s or L’s). That is one example. One problem; Are there any collectors out there that have early T-34s with the 76mm gun? This movie (like a few others) had T-34/85s (which weren’t around then) OK small nit pick.
Hey the movie even has a hollywood style love interest to it (sort of qualifying it as a “chick movie”) So you can take a girlfriend to it. (certainly a good excuse when you are standing in line with her and she wants to see “What Women Want” with Mel Gibson.)
So anyway, finally there is a good movie that shows the sacrifice that Russia endured. And there are a few other scenes I won’t tell you about that are like they jumped right off the page of a history book.
The plot it was based around was told to be convenient for movie makers, but I will tell you, they sure captured just a little taste of what the Battle of Stalingrad must have been like. And for that I am thankful I got to see it.
