Hi Guys,
I was just wondering if the ‘offline mode’ on mobile phones acts in the same ways of which a flight safe mode would – as the camera on my phone is superb, and I’d hate not to use it if I could.

OFFLINE mode..
I have used my NOKIA N73 and N95 in flight in the OFFLINE mode for the use of the MP3 player..
The OFFLINE modes on the above Nokia turns off any radio freq, blue tooth, infrared etc..
The ONLY problem with these phones is you have to put it into OFFLINE mode before you take off.. as when you power the phone on it does not give you the option…
I have used mind and no FA has ever mentioned anything to me and i have left in on the tray in front of me..
Look at FR, they were looking at allowing you to use your mobile on board anyway..
i would like the idea of been able to use it onbard… however on the other hand i would hate to be sat next to some one for 3 hours who is chatting..
One thing i do like about flying on business is that its the only time you can really stop working and have an excuse to turn the phone off!! but then theres the laptop to work on and catch up!

I guess it just depends who you fly with.
Absolutely. I believe BA is the only UK airline to allow Flight Mode to be used in flight. The others as FlyMonarch rightly says have decided that it is too much hassle for crew to identify whether passengers are complying with the rules or not. When asking people who are blatantly lying about it for their own self-important benefit I often think the other airlines have it right.
As for Offline Mode I’ve never heard the term but I can only assume that it means the same. The key point is that it stops the phone transmitting or receiving.

Offline and inflight mode im sure are if not a similar thing. Most airlines say these are not permitted due to the fact that we (as crew) when passengers have on their phones arnt mobile manufactures so dont know what every phone does and doesnt do. there for as a courtesy keep them off completely ..
I’ve been on quite a few flights where the crew have clearly stated phones may be turned on during the flight as long as they’re in ‘flight mode’. I guess it just depends who you fly with.

I find it highly annoying when passengers blatantly ignore the calls for switching off mobiles before take off. I remember flying BLR-HYD here on a SpiceJet 737 when just before landing the aircraft had to do a go around. The pilot announced, in an understandably irritated voice that due to a mobile device on in the aircraft his radio transmissions were interrupted, leading to a go around.

I know when you fly in India they announce that mobile phones on offline or aircraft mode are not accepted.

I’m guessing offline will shut down the radio bits of the phone but it might be best to consult the manual or check with the manufacturer first!
