Beggers belief! Invincible is on the defence disposals site. At £2million scrap value looks like she is going to be cut up!
She should be saved as a museum!

Utter disgrace!

In the US Museum Ships are very popular and most are profitable.

514000 is not a million, & I fail to see the relevance of a bunch of thuggish authoritarian statists (ever studied their economic policies?) to a debate about whether ships should be turned into museums.

First thought, what would you want it as a musuem for? Don’t you know we (UK) are only allowed to pretend the past never happened, especially the past involving wars…;)
One thing going for selling the Ark is that it has two sisters for spares. Perhaps they can offer a package deal?
Perhaps not as well suited as an RFA vessel, but what about a diasaster relief ship, run by ??????EU/UN/DEC?
The BNP represent about 1 million people in the UK, so perhaps we could have it for them, they would certainly be proud of the history 😎

It is just not possible to save everything and museum ships are very expensive to maintain, there are existing historic ships which need funds so whats the point of carrier being saved at their expense.
Because we don’t have one as a museum. Nobody is suggesting saving ALL ships, just one of each type. We should have saved a battleship too. We spent £15 million on the world cup bid I hear, so £2 million on a carrier is a bargain.
Which ever way you put it, it’s still mad to have carriers and sell/scrap the aircraft which fly from them.
Paul
As Russell said though, there a bit of a difference between “aircraft without carriers” and “no aircraft or the required carrier until both are delivered, around the same time”. And if you want to be REALLY pedantic, the first aircraft arrived for structural testing earlier this year IIRC, and we still have “aircraft” in the form of Apache.

Will fixed wing aviation in the RN be gone until 2020?! When did that happen???!

I see the press have finally woken up to this and you read it here first! 🙂

The attraction of having such a ship open for tourism is very high, though England isn’t interested, take the case of the recent Steam Carrier- Formerly Vengence/ Minas Gerias. This vessel was the last of it’s kind in the world and there was a call for it to be preserved- but no one lifted a finger in England- I fear this will happen to Vince as well.
People there may have patriotism, but no one has money, the government is looking at cut backs across the board and as such Vince is to be scrapped- they want more money for themselves hence sell everything off, cancel projects and reduce expenditure across board.

there is a strong chance that INS viraat i.e hermes might be preserved as well. so one falklands veteran might be around for sometime.
By: Fedaykin - 28th November 2010 at 18:46
Well my reasoning would be there is no British carrier in the UK preserved for future generations to explore.
Actually the only preserved British built carrier is HMS Hercules (R49)/INS Vikrant (R11) in Mumbai but she saw no service with the RN.
HMS Invincible has an actual combat record which certainly qualifies her for preservation to my mind.

Saw her in a sad state at Pompey in September. For £2 million, future generations in the 22nd century will wonder how the government could scrap one of the main warships involved in the Falklands War – similar to if the Victory had been cut up after Trafalgar!
