My 6 week old FUJIFILM S5000 has developed a serious problem. The zoom lens has bugged and wont move and it just makes a funny noise.
I am awaiting a phone call from their helpline to discus repair work etc.

Perhaps we should start an S5000 Aviation Photo Club – or something!

Yep, I use the same Fuji 1.5x Telephoto. You have to set the camera up to take photos at 6mp – the default is half that – which is why your photo is much smaller – or I think you might try RAW mode, but I don’t.
The way to get pictures of planes in flight is a bit frustrating. You need to depress the shutter button halfway to get it to focus and set the whitebalance and whatnot, then take the shot when you’re ready – keep moving with the plane.
Robbo and others have also shown me how to slow down the shutter, but I find that it still isn’t adequate to blur props in flight, as the background washes out badly, so jets should be better. I leave it in auto mode most of the time though. Its better when its cloudy.

RobAnt – do you use a telephoto lens for your photos? I recently got the Fuji x1.5 lens for my S5000 but don’t think it would get as close as your photos. Also do you have any hints and tips for a beginner to the S5000? Thanks.
This photo was taken with the built in zoom.

Canon 10D for around £800 these days
ummmm, £800 compared to £180 – a fair comparison?. FWIW I believe the S5000 offers somewhat better VFM. True it doesn’t do better pictures, but – well – judge for yourselves: –
These were taken at Branscombe earlier this year, and have been compressed – the originals are somewhat more impressive: –

Hi
My two bobs worth is that I like the Canon 300D and 10D but having owned them I have now moved on to a Nikon D70 and am a little happier than I was with the Canons. The reason for swapping was accidential and I already had Nikon lenses but I do prefer the Nikon – it just works a little better and has a more solid build to it.
I bought mine in Singapore and you would probably save the cost of your trip on the Camera price in Orchard road – the warranty is universal and it is brand new stock – I have now taken 5000 shots over the past month and am very happy.

It is the man, not the camera. As long as you know what you are doing and the limitations of your particular choice then the world should be a mollusc of your choosing.
(Sorry – I use a Nikon D1 and D70…)

Glad yopu got your camera sorted.
Just a quick question for the digital users here. I’m thinking of going digital and was thinking of a EOS 300D. Is this a decent camera to get? Bear in mind I’m not loaded and a 300D is pretty much top of my budget, or should I go a bit higher and go for a 10D.
Thanks
Neal

The replacement camera I got today is in fact an S5500 which is a slight update to the S5000.

Well Argos have replaced the camera already. Fuji told me to call them, so I did and they said bring it in and we will replace it for you.
So you’re the one who bought an S5000 from Argos! Hate to say it, but they go for nearly half price on t’internet. Mine was £189. Nice camera for that sort of money.

Step 1: Open window
Step 2: Throw Fuji out
Step 3: Close window
Step 4: Buy Canon EOS 300DMartin
You can buy a Canon 10D for around £800 these days – I’d go for one of them – rather than a 300D or even a D70

10 out of 10 to both Fuji and Argos for their help 🙂

Thanks richB
Swiss Mustangs as much as I would like an EOS 300D I simply cannot afford it.

Take it back and get a new one – dont let them repair it. I bought a Konica Minolta Z2 in May at internet prices from Jessops and the veiwfinder went wrong a couple of weeks ago. I took it back and was offered a straight replacement, but as I had done a bit of research beforehand I managed to get it swapped for a Z3 and got some cash back!! 🙂
good luck
