Words of wisdom please all………
In a few short months its the big 50.
I set out to achieve 3 things. So far I have managed to do two. 1 hour in the F4 simulator in Yorkshire (stunning) followed by 30 minutes in a Tiger from Duxford (excellent – my PPL lapsed in 1994 but the pilot still let me do plenty of the flying !). The plan is to complete the trio with a flight on the Concorde sim at Brooklands.
So the questions are as follows, do you have any other recommendations for aviation activities in the UK only and any suggestions for avition gifts I could persuade SWMBO to buy me.
Failing that….what would you do do or buy yourself for the big 50 !
(If I win the lottery it would be straight over to Canada for a flight in the Lancaster !)
You have control !

That’s something else I’ve always wanted to do, aeros in a Pitts. Don’t fancy a negative G climb though.

I remember someone at Cranfield who went up in a Pitts… asked how much aeros he wanted he told him to throw the lot at him as he was a man of steel……
he lifted off rolled it inverted and did a neg G climb.. seemed to be more a bucket of steel that had probs keeping it’s contents in 😀

Aerosuperbatics at Rendcomb Go for it !:)

I was 50 a few months ago and my whole family got together and made it a wonderful aviation-related birthday to remember. Among other things I was given a voucher for a wing-walking flight with Aerosuperbatics at Rendcomb (always wanted to do it), an hour’s flight over London in a Classic Wings Rapide from Duxford, a “flight” in a 747 simulator at Hurn, and my sister and her partner even commissioned a beautiful Tim O’Brien painting of a BSAA York! What a lucky chap eh?!
I looked upon 50 as just another birthday, but it turned out to be one I’ll never forget.

One of the best kept secrets this year is the rides available at Wings Over Houston in October 🙂

This is the best opportunity to fly in a WW2 bomber anywhere in 2011.
The only problem with this magnificent line up is …..
The all launch at roughly the same time after the show on Saturday and that tends to be the only opportunity to fly as a passenger.
So you have to pick ONE to fly in :diablo:
I’ve popped over for this show before as a long weekend trip.
Airfares are reasonable at this time of the year and there are plenty of hotels around Ellington Field

For those of us of slightly older than 50 perhaps we need a ‘Bucket List’. 🙂

Fear not Waco, 50 is but a small step along the way.
Here am I at the grand old age of 21, just eligible to vote for our wonderful politicians. Just stepped down from my last flight in a DH 98 Timber Terror.
Next step is 80, would there be a DH 80 available ???

I assume from your name that you will have done the WACO UPF-7 at Key West and the YMF-5 trips from Sedona?

A 7th seat trip in XH558 last time I flew in a Vulcan was in XM656 to Goose Bay. Happy days when we had an air force.
Cheers

Waco..
I’m 50 in less than a weeks time.. My idea is to start drinking on the 4th and be sober on the 11th so I dont remember the actual event!!
They told me that life begins at 40, I’m still waiting!! Then they say life begins at 50 .. Hmmmm.. wonder what will happen at 60?
Cheers..

Try Planes of Fame Chino and Vale and the Reno air races. Its cheaper than a divorce!

Look for a unique opportunity to come up which is affordable (or not, but you’ve decided to do it anyway). If you can afford to wait until after your 50th, you’ll have a little more flex.
I grabbed the chance to fly with the BofB veterans over the channel as an early 50th (3 years early).
How about flying in formation with a Spitfire from a helicopter?
