Only the interest of Uk defence operations enabled the Shacks to continue in RAF service past their design life.

You mean only the almighty bog-up that was the Nimrod AEW forced the Shacks to continue….. etc

Shack N790WL in Texas the sad facts

I got an email from the CAF(or whatever you call it now) inTexas last year, they do not intend to operate the Shack and are fully aware of the fact that sadly the airframe has exceeded its life regarding the spar.
British Aerospace will not take any responsibilty for this airframe and the UK CAA were not willing to let it operate in the UK.
Only the interest of Uk defence operations enabled the Shacks to continue in RAF service past their design life.

This highlights a potential pitfall of buying some ex uk Mod airframes and expecting to fly them in the UK. Just because they were allowed to fly under the MOD rules does not mean they can fly under civil rules.(notwithstanding approved modifications)

I fully appreciate your remarks as to them being slightly the underdog and that the other companies’ types have taken most of the limelight, but as Auster played a large part in the postwar GA market hopefully as the type is now gaining interest it hopefully wont be forgotten.

Martin

Also very important in WW2, a fascinating company and also a lot of local interest for me, Leicestershire County Council have a few interesting types in storage which they would display if they could, may arrange to see them in storage though

They are probably practising for the Ysterplaat show on the 3rd or possibly the Bredasdorp show this coming weekend.

Good question! Sounds like the same Gannet – is it still airworthy, do you know?

EDIT: I’ve searched for “Gannet” on the forum, and there seesm to be a great deal of confusion. I get the impression that the Anoka one is still in Labrador and that Kennet’s is a different one. But don’t quote me on that!

Is that Gannet still flying in the USA? Just imagine the puzzlement on the crowds faces if a Shack and a Gannet flew over in formation!

Adrian

Arent Kennet meant to be taking delivery of the ex Anoka Gannet, or have I got my wires crossed?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙁 Which one is your favourite? It’s great that the Auster is starting to be recognised for the fine little aircraft that it is. It’s been overlooked for far too long and seemingly the “poor relation” when compared with the Miles and de Havilland types etc (which are deservedly treasured, by the way!)

Umm hard to say, but I suppose the Mk.9. Nearly had a go in one when I was a kid, but got told to go away and now have flown in 4 examples. But they are all good and all full of character.

There was a picture of it in flight during an ‘Airsho’ in this months Flypast. Was it implied that it was part of the confederate airforce (or whatever they are called now)?

Why is it on days when something interesting happens, you never have your camera with you!

I was lucky enough to be in a flight of 4 different models of Auster on Sunday (Aiglet Trainer, Autocar, Terrier and AOP.9) – the weather was superb, if a little cold, and none of us had a camera between us. I knew there was something that I had left at home and realised what it was, when we were all bobbing around.

Perhaps next time…..
