And what ever happened to the proposed project to recover the Chinese Stirling ?

LOL!!!! 😀

A friend of mine was the CO of a POW camp at El Adem just postwar and he said that a great deal of kit was covered by sandstorms in the late 1940s – he remembers finding a compound of kubelwagen which he had to get to SHQ for staff use – they lashed them together with rope and towed them in single file behind a truck til they reached civilisation – reckoned a Diamond T or equivalent would tow at least thirty quite happily…!

if there are still airfields in the libyan desert with stuff out in the open, how about trying somthing like google earth to try and get some indication of what is out in the sand???

Ya just know the US Govt has every sq inch of that place mapped out by Satellite & SR71..
Saw a nice pic a few years back that was taken by an RAF Canberra over Tripoli just after the bombing raids. Theres the unmistakable shape of an SR71 BELOW the Canberra.. LOL!

Hi Cees,

I would love to go and get them but the problem is the guy who made the original post on Wixs has never gotten back in touch with me nor has he return Don Martins and a thrird person who knows him any phone calls.

We contacted the INS to see if they could point us in the right direction and they had no idea what we where talking about, they gave us the three site Mangers and we have talk to them and they have no idea.

I know they are out their because I have read the accident reports which are very cloudy on location. If I don’t get a return call over the bext few days then I’m going to drive up to his home and find out.

As for the Libyain stuff its going to take some time to get this ok, one thing I’ve learn so far is the Libyain Gov. takes there sweet time.

So Cees what fun things have you been digging up 😀

Hurricanes in maine

Rob,

Why not recover the three Hurricane wrecks in Maine, you have been talking about for a long time, first before you start on something much more difficult.

Would make a nice training project before hauling all those Axis beauties from Ghadaffi’s grasp.

Cheers

I worked in Libya from 1966-68 and subscribe to the view that Libya is the a…hole of Africa and Misurata, where I worked, is 130 miles up it. There wasn’t much air activity other than overflying Canberras from El Adem (?) but a demo Islander arrived at the huge ex-USAAF strip at Misurata one day. I don’t know who was more surprised, me to see an Islander in the middle of nowhere or the pilot to find an Englishman. Prior to the discovery of oil the export of scrap metal, i.e tanks and other war material, was one of the main foreign currency earners so I guess a lot of the aircraft got swept up in that. I hope crazymainer is right but I won’t hold my breath.

A cousin of mine won the Victoria Cross at Tobruk – the first Australian in WW2..would that get me a ticket??

No, but it would get him the undying admiration and gratitude of every sane person in the world.

Hmmmmm…….Tigers 😉

Let’s hope there is stuff out there, 😀 but I’m a little surprised that there would still be much out there at all, as I was led to believe the desert had largely be picked clean of anything by the locals over the past half a century.

That’s what the locals were saying in Tunisia when I was there 5 years ago, and anything that is left, is because it got covered by sand and can’t be seen anymore.

There was that supposed LRDG truck that was discovered some years back, and I believe a new battery was put on it, a fluids change, and it was started up or driven out of the desert…..or something like that, I believe it’s on display somewhere in Egypt now.

Hi Firebird,

Yes alot of stuff was cleaned up in the mid50s thru early 60s. But that was stuff around the major citys like Tripolie.Remmeber alot of the Air Base where locate far from the major citys.

Yes alot of stuff has been buried but there has been alot of stuff unbuired, as for other Goodies yes there are alot of Armor out there I’ve ssen photos of 12 Tigers sitting in a dump. Plus here is a little unknow fact that the Libyain Military used alot of German Armor that was left behind for themselfs and there is still quite alot of it sitting in there dumps.

As for aircraft well there is still around 200+ aircraft out their including some rather rare stuff, i can’t get into the details but think about what was used during the early part of the Desert War on both sides.

As for the LRDG their are at least three here in the States that I’ve heard about one the US Army Musuem has and the other two are in private hands.

Cheers

Which is more valid for research – pristine restored, or ‘as found’?

Hmm, that link John posted claims:
“This only known surviving LRDG WWII vehicle is now resting in the Imperial War museum in London”

Well, there’s one in the Queen Elizabeth II War Memorial Museum at Waiouru, NZ, which I understand is the genuine article, and also a collector here in NZ also has one that’s drivable which I’ve seen many times when it’s visited and the plaque on it claims it too is a genuine example from memory. Both are in pristine restored condition unlike the IWM example. Perhaps these were genuine ones that the Kiwis brought home?

There’s an LRDG Chev in the IWM Lambeth, recovered from N Africa, but it wasn’t going anywhere under its own power.

Hi All,

Some of you might already know this but for the past nine months I’ve been working to get permission to go to Libya to do some look see. Well the easy part was getting permission from the US Gov. Now the hard part is and it seems like each wek i have to come up with a new propusal for the libyians is the there Historical Branch beleive me folks when i say they have a very good idea what they have out in the desert,

I have seen Sta. photos of three major German Air Base with stuff still on them including six Stuka’s four Ju-88s and quite a nu,mber of 109s.

The last time I talk to the Libyain Consulate which was last Tuesday they siad I should have some idea on what they want to do with my latest propusal. I can tell you this thou they seem to be willing to work with you all they really want is to make sure they get their cut of the Pie.

Stay Tune Folks.

No I’m not going to say where these Air base are at this time and yes there are a few other goodies out their to.

Cheers
