I was just thinking about all the old aircraft that I used to fly abroad on years ago like the B727 and BAC 1-11. can anyone tell me if an airline exists (preferably in europe) where I can still fly as a passenger on a:
B727, BAC 1-11, Caravelle, L1011 Tristar, DC-10, B707, B737 (200 series).???
I would love to know so I can go on a nostalgia trip before it’s too late!
Thanks,
Paul.

Shame. I last saw a 1-11 at MAN about four years ago. Not seen a 727 or Tristar for years…
I would love to go on a B707 but don’t really fancy going to Iran. May mate said he went on one in Africa last year but he does’nt know the airline.
One more question: These aircraft that are operated in Third world countries, are they maintained properly e.t.c. or do the owners simply improvise? Are they subject to a C of A like we have here or can they basically do what they like???

Nationwide of South Africa were still operating one BAC 1-11 ZS-NUJ until a short while ago but I think this may have now stopped as well.
NWA are still flying DC10’s to Gatwick at the moment but their A330’s are being introduced at Gatwick in Oct 2004. My Travel are still operating one DC10 G-BYDA. I don”t know how long for though.
Not much chance of getting on many of the other types listed in Europe though.

I think the 1-11 has been grounded in Nigeria following a series of accidents.
Do JARO still operate their 1-11s?

Can you still fly Northwest DC-10’s from Gatwick ? You certainly could in December when I snapped a pair.

I don’t know if there are any 1-11’s still in pax service anywhere, the likely place would be Africa if there were.

Bmused – Slight correction the 1-11 was still able to operate commercially, within Europe, up until March 31st 2002.

Euro Atlantic Airways operate L1011’s in Europe still. Mainly operating out of MAn and DUB I think, but they’re due to start up at STN this summer. May be able to work out a way to get on one…..

Boeing 707: Saha Air of Iran, six passenger 707’s… Here is a report by a fellow smokers enthusiast who has flown with Saha (and also visited the 720’s at Beirut)! Another operator is Air Gulf Falcon. There is still a VIP configured 707 flying in Romania (ex-TAROM), but you have to be high up in the organisation to get on that…
Boeing 727: Iran Aseman Airlines, four 727-200’s… operating to the UAE for example. Another operator is Air Algérie who regularly flies into Lyon, for example. Libyan Arab Airlines still operate 727-2L5’s to Malta. Syrian Arab Airlines’ six 727-200’s earn their keep around the Middle East. One could also go to South America to sample the services ofTAME Ecuador who still operate 727-200’s (ex-Lufthansa) and 727-100’s (ex-Transair Sweden). But within Europe, there are unfortunately no pax 727’s left. I’m happy to even see a freigher these days, they’re very scarce at Stockholm-Arlanda. Another tip is to go to Indonesia, lately a few 727-200’s have been given a new career by some low-cost airlines there.
Boeing 737-200: Like Bmused says, Ryanair. Aren’t European and Palmair still operating them as well? In the USA, Africa and South America they’re still very much in use.
Douglas DC-8: No passenger services anywhere in the world… only a few combi aircraft left, and they’re doing military charters. A few VIP DC-8’s are still flying, the ARAMCO DC-8-72 for example.
Douglas DC-9: I think JAT still operates an all-white DC-9-32. Two former Finnair DC-9-51’s have found a new owner in UMAir of the Ukraine.
McDonnell Douglas DC-10: Bmused is right, Biman and Northwest are the only chances to fly them within Europe. Still common in the USA, Asia and South America.
Now, what I’d like to know – is there a decent chance one can get on an Ilyushin Il-62 anywhere?

the Boeing 737-200 you can get…..Ryanair, Air Lithuania and EAL

not in europe, but not a world away:
There is a Canadian start up that us using 727’s… Can’t remember their name now.
The only 727 operators here are DHL and other cargo lines.
Only airline I know in europe with PAx 737-200 is Ryanair. But not for long.
BAC 1-11 has been banned from european skies for arounf 8 years now. No hope there.
Same with the Caravelle. Both just to noisy.
DC-10, you can still hitch a lift on Northwest DC-10s at Amsterdam and a Biman Bangladesh from LHR.
707, only pax operator of that is in africa I think.
The Tristar….. found in charter airlines in North and south america, none in europe.
I’m sure there are a few more chances for the DC-10, 737-200 and L1011. Anyone care to add?
