Old Day Viewing area's!

I jst found this pic while browsing the pages of ‘a.net’, while looking at some of the old pics at BHX i came across this and it jst shows you how great viewing was back in the 80s!

That fence nowadays in BHX is 10ft high and on the top of that embankment as opposed to the bottom lol 😀

BOAC(x2), East African, Gulf Air and BCAL.

OK, the BCAL machine would have been ex-BUA so that’s almost 3 out of 4, I suppose. 😀

The photo’s shown of BHX are in fact the current viewing area. It’s just that the fence you see at the bottom of the bank is now at the top. The old viewing areas on the Elmdon site were superb. The steps alongside the tower are still there but I believe they are closed off now. And there was a grassed spectators area at the end of the terminal where the GA aircraft now park. You could stand at the fence and feel the exhaust heat as Viscounts and DC9’s of BMA and Comets and 727’s of Dan-air were backed away from the terminal ready for departure.

They were indeed ‘good old days’, alas I have no pictures. Maybe a search of photo sites covering the mid 70’s would turn up some gems?

Ahhh, I wish I was too young to have ever seen a VC10 or a Britannia in airline service. 😉

I once saw 5 VC10s parked in a row at Ringway, many many moons ago, from 4 different airlines on a day when Heathrow and Gatwick were closed by fog.

Bliss!!!!! 😀

Would they have been BOAC, (or BA), Ghana Airways, BUA and Gulf Air by any chance?

Sorry, chaps, those were the only photos I took at that time, except for this American visitor, which I know is military, but was taken at the same time. I don’t know what the Scout was doing, but since we (the RAF) shared Muharraq with the civilians, and there were also plenty of Army bods there, it had probably strayed from the Military part of the airfield. I was serving Queen and country at the time, and never really thought about taking more pics, more’s the pity – we had 9 Sqn Hunters there, and a whole bunch of 115 Sqn Argosies, but that’s definitely a military story!
Ren Frew, if you would like to PM me I may be able to meet you or give you a hand in Gothenburg, at least I speak fluent Swedish!

This was a serious question and I would like a sensible answer, please.
Perhaps a moderator could answer it?

Those pictures could fit equally well in this forum or the Historic aviation one. But as we generally deal in commercial airliners and Historic seems largely dominated by those who have historic military interests then I’d suggest you put them here as you’ve already done.

There’s no hard and fast ruling concerning this, you might want to put a little posting and link on one or other forum inviting readers to have a look at the “other” forum which is a technique some people use. 😀

P.S With any luck I’ll be paying a visit to Gothenburg this month.

I regularly see an F-27 Friendship in EDI. BAC cargo I believe.

I think there are still one or two F-27’s operating in a PAX role in Africa and the far east. Not too sure.

Fantastic shots Sir, a real joy to see them. I think they are equally at home in commercial or historic. If I were you I’d continue to post them here to give some of the younger forumites a taste of what they missed.

When do Commercial subjects become Historic?
Is there are “cut-off” year? Or are commercial propeller-driven aircraft historic and passenger jets commercial?
I have some lovely VC-10 pics from 1968 and wonder where I should post them, if I ever do.
