Great footage here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyZj6EQYDRE and here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_ZkRSbEW1A&feature=related
Harry Midwood,Dave Luddington,Harvey Britten were the tug pilots. The club started at Podington Oct 1959 and moved to Cranfield in May 1965 when drag racing started at Santa-Pod. Bill Sykes was the club chairman and owned a Slingsby Eagle. Aircraft noted Tiger Moths G-ANLR(tug),NRF,NMZ, Auster 6A G-ARIH(tug),Stampe G-ASHS,DH.Dragon G-ADDI joyriding at Billing ? and using Podington for fuel /parking ? Whitney Straight G-AEUJ. DH.89 Dragon Rapide G-AKNN not in the film was also based for skydiving in 1965.Any further news most welcome.
On the second film some footage is shot at an RAF air display probably “At Home” at RAF Wyton ?

Do you know if Barry Tempest is on the Podington film . I know that he was a founder member of the McAully Flying Group at Little Snoring .

Thanks Blue Max ,
If I come over to Sywell can I say hello in person as I live locally ? I learned to fly their with Paul Smith CFI and I just take great interest in local aviation history ,very important that we record it.

There is no date on that clipping, i have another one with a date of the 4th of September 1964. The display was on the 29th of August 1964.

Brilliant response about a lesser known airfield. The films were shot by Tony Barrow I am certain, RAFGSA and ATC gliding instructor thats him in the T-21 also. I know Derek Wilcox from my gliding at Lyveden, often aero-towed me home from out-landings. For Blue Max click on Topcameraman on YouTube It gives profile/contact details. Do you have a date for the newspaper cutting ? Harvey Britten(not Britain) and Colin Goodman ? started the Tiger Moth Flying Group I believe. Any further anecdotes on sixties Podington ? At the same time there was USAF Flying Clubs at Molesworth used Auster J/4 G-AJXY and Chelveston Aeronca 7AC ?

I hope the sunburst scheme has been retained on SHS as they were all display icons in their heyday.
Happy times……..
Sadly not at the moment. SHS is currently under maintenance in The Blue Max’s hangar in a sort of chocolate and cream livery.
Bod’s working on the current owner though! 😉

I have flown TKC and WEF and I am pretty certain that I have flown in SHS (possibly flour bombing).

G-AROZ was one, there was also G-ATKC which sadly also crashed following an inflight structural failure and G-AWEF which is still about. G-ASHS is still alive and well and currently in my hangar at Sywell recieving some TLC 🙂

Thanks Blue Max, I have learned something new today. That is the first time I have seen pictures of ASHS without sunbust scheme. There was another TC Stampe in sunburst (AROZ?) that Neil ‘left behind the hangar’ at Biggin Hill. I guess that was about the time that ASHS changed its scheme. I also understand that Rollasons did a lot of work at this time developing the Gypsy inverted fuel system so that it could match the Renault upside down (and better it for reliability).

Correct, G-ASHS in pre yellow and red sunburst scheme and Renault engine;)
By: Arabella-Cox - 9th June 2010 at 20:48
The Blue Max
I am confused by the Stampe if that was G-ASHS it was before the yellow and red sunburst colour scheme and the fitment of the Gypsy engine. The Stampe in the film has a Renault. Perhaps it was taken before Rollasons ‘got to it’.
Otherwise it would be good to know whether there is any other Tiger Club air display footage available. I would still like to see ‘G’ Men again for old times sake too.

Thats Dad flying Stampe G-ASHS:)
It was Lewis “Benjy” Benjamin flying the SOW Tiger with his wife Lolita on the wing.
Here is a paper cutting from the time.

Excellent footage.
Does anyone know who was flying the Standing on Wing (SOW) Tiger and which Stampe that was.
That slow roll in the Tiger was good. There are probably a lot of ‘aerobatic aces’ around nowadays who couldn’t do that!
Ah nostalgia – it isn’t what it used to be.:)

WOW, has anybody got details of who has these films???? PLEASE!
Have not watched the fist yet as it keeps locking!!!!!!
The second in particular features my father Charles Boddington flying the Super Tiger(Archbishop) Aero’s and the Stampe, also the current owner of ASHS will be interested.
For info G-ALNR wasnt Derreks Tiger, it belonged to the Tiger Flying Group at Poddington of which Derrek, my father and Harvey Britain were members, you can see Harvey wing walking the Tiger in at the RAF Display just before my father gets out! This maybe Cottesmore, i have a note from the station comander thanking Dad for the display!!
Derrek has had a few Tigers but his own long owned one is G-ANNK which he still has.
I would love to get a copy of these, as kids we spent alot of time at Poddington durring these days.
By: wiggy963 - 7th June 2010 at 14:51
Thats Derreck Willcox with G-ANLR, his privately owned aeroplane was used as a tug at Poddington (Northamptonshire GC) and Cranfield for both the NGC and the Col of Aeronautics GC for many years.
