Hi Peter
This is part of an email an ex Jaguar pilot sent me and explains the film part of the PMD.
Paul

“The map was a standard 35mm slide transparency film with the standard
RAF half million scale low flying charts projected onto it. The computer
moved the film to the required position, and the transparency was
projected onto the rear of the map display glass, which was a fresnel
lens to reduce the distortion of the projection lens.

It is similar to the INAS Inertial NAv System in Harriers (GR.1-3) and the film is the projected moving map.

Yep, looks like Jag bits to me. Most Jag parts carry the prefix 121E as was mentioned earlier in the thread. What you thought was a camera is the remains of the PMD (projected map display) as used in the GR1 and T2. The GR3 and T4 Jag used a MPCD (multi purpose colour display) Hope that helps.

Thanks F4mphixer,that helps alot! i thought the film might be a camera but now i know different.;)

Hi Peter,

Can’t vouch for the MMD although my first thoughts on seeing the picture of the film was that it was part of the old BAE recce pod which used wet film, but Pauls comments and views of the MMD tends to make me think that he’s correct. F4MPhixer has it right I think

If you know exactly where these items were recovered from then somebody could probably work out what aircraft it was, there were not that many Jags really.

I am afraid I can’t help with that, it could be the internals of the PMD, it could also be part of the laser marker and range finder from the nose. The Jaguars carried cameras as external stores so my guess is it is not one. Maybe 12jaguar or some of the other ex Jag pers could ID it.

Further ID

Paul.
Would this be part of the moving map display then or a camera?

The knobs give it away and since I have pulled mine out I know what the back of it looks like too! I am just glad to be helping someone else out for a change.

That third photo looks a lot like a Projected Map Display from a Jaguar GR1 or 1A as well as part of the instrument panel it slides into. See the attached pic.

Hello John
I thought they might be jaguar. They were recovered off the south east coast of the UK. I need to get a positive ID for the chap who sent me the pics. The third pic might be instrumentation related. They did also find parts of a camera hence the reason I thought the third pic might be a camera?

Have those items been in the sea? They certainly look like they have.

That’s not a camera but appears to be a radar scope or instrumentation.

John
