Old Photographs of RAF Vickers Valentia's in Middle East circa 1930's

Hello,

I have some photographs here of the Royal Air Force Vickers Valentia. The photo’s are all from the same period circa 1930’s and at various places around the Middle East , Rutbah, Nr Mosul in Iraq, Amadia in Iraq. One aircraft is definately 216 SQUADRON RAF and some registrations include… K3165 and K3611.

All the images were purchased on EBAY recently.

Again, as with my previous post ref ‘ Supermarine Walrus photo’s ‘ i do hope that they will be of interest to members.

All of these photos measure around 2″ x 3″ and under a magnifying glass are very very clear and wonderful… which is not captured by these scans.

Photo 1:

On the original print i can see with a magnifying glass that on the nose is the emblem of 216 SQN Royal Air Force. It is bleached out in this scan unfortunately.

216 Squadron Heliopolis

Interested to find your post re’ Vickers Valentia.

Thought you may like to know my Father was a Sergeant Pilot with 216 Squadron based in Heliopolis and his regular aircraft was K3167. I have a few photo’s and his Log Books detailing some of the aircraft’s service in Egypt if anyone is interested.
He went on to complete the war finally as Sdn Ldr with 139 Sqn Pathfinders flying Mosquito from Upwood.

Valentias

Hi Desertblooms,

Sorry to jump on your thread but I was very excited to find your Valentia photos. I am currently working on an article which includes the crash of a 216 Sqn Valentia – K3166. I have some photos to support this element but none of a complete Valentia in 216 Sqn markings. Can you help? PM sent too.

Yours

hey l.garey

An interesting read and thanks for your reply.

I find out a bit more about these old planes every day it seems.

What a pity no one has found a forgotten about Valentia in an old hangar somewhere in the Middle East or beyond!!!

Thanks for the Valentias, DesertBlooms.

This one was given to me by Tony Tubbenhauer, who flew with the Habbaniya Communications Flight in early 1942, while on his way to fly Blenheims with 244 Sqd at Sharjah. It is K3599, the first of 28 Valentias, and it was one of the RAF’s last survivors of the type. His logbook shows another Valentia at Habbaniya, in which he flew to Heliopolis, Cairo. He entered it only as “8063”, so I assume this was an ex-Victoria conversion, J8063 (like K3165 you mentioned).
