Any of you folks have any old photos showing aircraft at any military airfields in Wales (current or disused)?
Please Message me if you have – would appreciate it!

Would love to see that here Anne, if you can post it?

Old photos of airfields in Wales
Sorry for the late reply. Are you still looking? My father was CO of 762 Sqdn in ’44 and has his photo album. I remember an aerial pic of Dale amongst others if you are interested. Let me know.

Do you have his Course number?
I have access to scans specific to Course 115A from 1943 that pictures the following personnel:
Knox; Steinbeck; Bowes; Millmot; Burge; Kroschel; Jarvis; Tyne; Black and Page.
Plus items relating to other ex 1661 HCU Australian and British related crews that served in 5 Group.
But as previously posted they have specific copyright issues, relating to various ongoing projects, which would need to be discussed with the people who own the photographs.

I’d be particularly interested in the Penrhos pictures as my Dad did his gunnery training there in 1943. Could you please let me know where I could find these photos. Thanks

Hi Mark, from memory there are some good older pics of Pembrey on AIX, pretty sure from early Hunter period.
Visited there again very recently, wonderful place still.
Thanks James (sorry for the late reply, been distracted lately and lost track of this thread!) – will drop you a PM.

Nice new book just out on RAF Lichfield by Hope Publishing; plus several RAF Penrhos pictures in circulation in particular relating to Australian Bomb Aimer Courses, which later moved on to the OTUs and HCUs – sadly copyright might be an issue! 🙁

Have you seen Ivor Jones’ Airfields and Landing grounds of Wales? Some good contemporary pictures in them.

There are some good Brawdy shots on there that fit the bill, I believe mainly posted by two members from here.
The Welsh Government has a good website on the old airfields, some cracking arials of St Athan and Llandow on there, but most of it is how the airfields look now.
I will try and find a link.
I have a few of St Athan and Llandow but copywrite prevents me from posting.

I’m already in contact with AIX but thanks for the pointer. You’d probably be surprised how difficult it is to find old pictures of airfields, particularly in that sort of region (Wales and the adjacent counties). There are a few well-known shots of course but the vast majority of airfields (most of which have long since been abandoned) just don’t seem to have been captured on film in their heyday.
It’s just a general request really, nothing in particular. A nice shot of Brawdy which shows the hangars and tower would be brilliant, or a decent shot of Castle Bromwich, RNAS Dale, Lichfield, Mona, Tern Hill, Condover, Hawarden and so on. And then there are the even more obscure sites like Penrhos, Hinstock, Cranage and so on. It’s amazing how many there are and yet pictures of any of them back in the days when they were in use, are incredibly rare. Of those that do survive, most seem to have been gobbled-up by the major libraries, but I don’t think many pictures were ever taken in the first place. Guess the locals were busy fighting a war!
Anyway, if anyone has the odd snapshot anywhere do please message me!

Sorry to ‘pounce’ but if anyone has any photos of Pembrey (especially the mid-1950s) I’d love to see them too.
