Old RFC landing ground in Anwick

the plaque may just’ve ended-up where it is as its more accesible by the side of a road rather than round the back of the garden centre.. i’d guess it marks the general area of the airfield as I presume it was a grass strip so dont think they had designated ‘runways’… but as you can see by use of the words guess and may I dont know either !!
As for WW2 decoy airfield… I suppose Digby is nearest..

Right then the comment about Anwick Garden Center being RFC/RAF Anwick seems to fit in with what I was thinking, it just looks right.

Anyway I have done a very iffy map that shows the garden center as a large grey blob, the church is shown by a cross. The current Anwick hanger is a gray box next to the church and the current runway is shown with gray dots.

So by adding the roads and then the position of the plaque it seems that the current runway was not the old RFC one and in fact the space between the plaque and garden center could be the site of the runway, as shown on my map with green dots.

Sorry if this seems a load of crap but it makes sense to me.

but is anybody close enough to photograph the plaque in question and post it on here or email it to me? It would be much appreciated

I will try my best mate, I live about 7 miles away, just by the old RAF Metheringham, and have a keen interest in the RAF’s history in Lincolnshire, I take it that the website in question is yours? If so, well done i use it all the time.

Gentlemen, if you happen to get hold of any further details on Anwick and its days as an RFC aerodrome can you let me know please? Any photos of the hangar and airstrip would be welcome – I suppose it isn’t too far from the recently photographed church?

This is what I think I have been able to establish about official RFC/RAF activity at Anwick but it is all secondary source research via the WWW: Anwick was an active airfield during the Great War. From 1916 it acted as an emergency landing strip for the Home Defence Squadrons which were tackling the Zeppelin threat on the approaches to the Midlands. Closed after the War it was then used during World War II as a decoy airfield (although I do not know for which airfield). It ceased to fulfil this function in 1942, reverting to farmland. Although I comment that the airfield lives on in the Old Manor Farm strip at Anwick Garden Centre and its single grass strip and hangar I have no further details on this.

A visitor to my website raised the point that “if anwick garden center was raf anwick/ why is there a raf plaque on the ruskington fen road?” I am not sure exactlty what he is asking – maybe an RAF vs RFC comment – but is anybody close enough to photograph the plaque in question and post it on here or email it to me? It would be much appreciated
