Can you remember the noise two Speys made on take off?

See the ridicules lengths the Queens Flight went to for HM or more likely one of the Royal parasites. Polishing the inside of a Dart’s jet pipe!

CV-990

I believe that only 37 Convair 990’s were built, I undertsand that there are plans to hopefully restore an ex Spantax Coranado, I hope this goes ahead and wish the restoration team sucess. To remind me of my CV990 flight as a kid, later in life when this Control wheel from N5615 came on the market I couldn’t resist buying it!!

Were the two CV990 flights from Palma by any chance, evening or night time flights? I remember as a kid flying back to Ringway on one Spantax CV990 flight with another in convoy. (Cannot remember if I was on the first flight or the second). All I know is that two flights were put on due to troubles with a tour company. This was about 1972-1974 (cannot be exact). I had the window seat and the thrust from the engines were emense on take off, the whole cabin shook. Great days, the outward journey was on a Spantax DC8 61 series such a long aircraft with plenty of leg room.

I had the honour to fly back from Spain in one (To Manc.). It was 1973ish, our holiday company “Clarksons” and their airline Court Line went bust. We got an extra week in Spain at no cost (In same hotel/room), they gave us some spending money and we flew back in a CV990. There were two CV990’s in convoy on the way back, IIRC the 2nd one landed about 15 mins behind us. Any fellow Ringway spotters remember that Saturday? Oh, and we flew out on a Court line 1-11 (The Pink one).

So much noise from such tiny engines, i remember them, can still feel the vibrations on a full throttle take-off

I’d say most of the lads on this forum have never seen a Convair Coronado!!!

I’ve seen one and funnily enough purchased a model of a Spantax version just the other day. As for Spantax generally, they also used to be weekend visitors to Glasgow in the summers of the late 70’s and early 80’s. As well as the Convair I recall seeing their DC-8-61’s come in too. Aviaco were there too back in the day…

As for that Queen’s Flight shot… A Hawker Siddelley 748 with ‘Andover’ designation. I remember watching tv shots of Charles and Di heading off on honeymoon in one after the royal wedding.

Oh, yes! We used to get a Cv990 every Saturday afternoon.

Now, there was a beast of an aircraft! πŸ™‚

You have to have a photo for us Grey…..Pleeeease!

Sorry, mate.

I didn’t take pictures in those days. πŸ™

….Let’s have some photos of the “old” freight apron to the left of Pier A, where the biggest aircaft I saw there was a Flying Tigers DC8.

We also used to get World Airways and TIA/Trans International DC8Fs (and B747s) on the old freight apron quite regularly, David.

Ah, no wonder I never saw one on the ground. I was going on the wrong day. Let’s have some photos of the “old” freight apron to the left of Pier A, where the biggest aircaft I saw there was a Flying Tigers DC8.

Great stuff.
I do indeed remember the noise the BAC1-11’s made! Too bad they are gone from the UK now.

There is still one with the ETPS at Boscombe Down in raspberry ripple.

Cheers Brian:rolleyes:

Your Spantax DC9 is very much an Aviaco DC9. DOn’t think Spantax made that many daytime visits (perhaps my memories are fading?).
